Loan App Harassment and Morphed Photo Scam

Illegal instant loan apps take contact and photo access, then send threats and morphed images to your family when repayment is demanded.

An advert offers an instant loan in minutes with only an Aadhaar and a selfie. The app asks for permission to read your contacts, photos and messages before it gives you the money. The amount you receive is smaller than promised, the repayment window is a few days and the charges are huge. When you cannot pay, callers threaten you and send abusive or morphed messages to people in your contacts.

How the scam works

The app is not from a trusted store or it hides behind a changing name. It asks to access contacts, photos, location and storage. Most of the loan form is simple, and approval is instant. The disbursed sum has fees and 'processing' deducted at the start, so you receive far less than the amount you are due to repay a week later.

The pressure is relentless once the due date approaches or passes. Agents call at all hours, and with the contacts they copied they send messages to your family, friends and colleagues describing you as a fraud. They may edit your photo into an offensive image and send it. A second app is then suggested to 'pay off' the first, trapping you in a cycle of debt.

The payoff is repeated payments of inflated amounts, often several times the amount borrowed. Fear of shame makes many pay again and again, or take a loan from another app. The agents also keep the data to threaten you later. Your documents, selfie and contacts remain with an unregulated operator that can reuse them for further fraud or blackmail.

An example of what you may see

Example message (invented): 'You borrowed Rs 5,000 and must repay Rs 9,500 today. If you do not pay by 6 PM, we will send your photo and a notice to all your contacts and your office. Pay now to the link. We have your family list.' The threat to use your contact list, the inflated repayment and the deadline are the pattern. Do not pay to threats, and keep every message as evidence.

This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

Red flags

What to do right now

  1. Stop using the app and do not take another loan to repay it.
  2. Take screenshots of every threat, call log and the app page.
  3. Remove the app's permissions in settings or uninstall it after saving evidence.
  4. Tell your family and close contacts that threats may be coming and to ignore them.
  5. Report to cybercrime.gov.in and to your local police station.

If you already paid or shared a code

  1. Call 1930 if you paid and want it recorded, giving payee details.
  2. Block the numbers and keep evidence for your complaint.
  3. File a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in with the app name, screenshots and payment proof.
  4. If threats continue, tell the police and a trusted person; do not pay under pressure.

National Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930. Report online at cybercrime.gov.in. Do it fast: the sooner your bank is told, the better the chance that money can be held.

How Safeavio helps

Safeavio Sentinel's phone scan reviews installed apps, requested permissions and apps from outside a store, which can reveal a lending app asking for contacts, photos and messages. The permissions review in the privacy tools shows what each app can access. The scam check reads threatening messages you paste. It cannot stop callers or delete data an app has already copied, so report and keep evidence.

Check it before you tap or pay

Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions people ask

Why do loan apps ask for my contacts?

Illegal lenders use contact lists to pressure borrowers by messaging family and friends. A genuine lender does not need your contacts. If an app demands them, do not install it, and review permissions on anything already installed.

What should I do about morphed photos?

Do not pay. Save the messages and report to cybercrime.gov.in and the local police. Tell your contacts that threats may come and that they are not true. Keep calm and keep evidence. Write down what happened while it is fresh.

Is it safe to borrow from a new app?

Check that the lender is a registered financial company through official sources before installing. Be wary of apps that approve instantly, hide the full cost or demand your contacts. When unsure, use a bank. Share the story with family so they recognise it.
