Mystery Shopper Task Scam

A 'mystery shopper' job asks you to buy items or test a money transfer with money they send first. See how overpayment and fake reimbursements work.

A message offers easy income as a mystery shopper: visit a store, test a payment service and report back, keeping part of the money as your pay. The 'company' sends you a payment first and asks you to spend most of it on items or to transfer part to another person. The first payment later fails or is reversed, and your own money has been sent away. Students and homemakers are common targets.

How the scam works

The scammer posts the offer on social media or emails a 'recruitment' message that sounds like a market research firm. After a short chat, you are given an assignment: buy specific gift cards or products, send a portion through a payment app to test a money-transfer service, and send a report with photos. The task looks harmless and comes with a clear 'earning'.

To start, the 'company' sends a payment or a cheque, or shows a screenshot of a transfer. You are told to deduct your fee and send the rest to a 'supervisor' or to buy gift cards immediately because the assignment expires. The speed and the screenshot leave no time to check whether the money has actually arrived in your own account.

The payoff is your own money, sent to the scammer, while the original payment or cheque bounces or is a fake screenshot. Gift card codes you read out are used at once. The scammer then offers a second 'bigger assignment' to make up for the problem, which is another round of the same trick. Some victims also share their ID and bank details for 'payroll'.

An example of what you may see

Example message (invented): 'Mystery shopper needed, Rs 3,000 per task. You will receive Rs 20,000 for the assignment. Keep Rs 3,000 as your fee, send Rs 12,000 to our evaluator through UPI to test the service and buy gift cards worth Rs 5,000 from the nearby store. Share the card codes and a screenshot within one hour.' The screenshot of the incoming Rs 20,000 shows no bank name, and the 'payment' never appears in your account.

This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

Red flags

What to do right now

  1. Do not send any money or gift card codes on behalf of an employer.
  2. Check the actual balance and credit in your own banking app, not a screenshot.
  3. Look up the company on its official website and see whether it hires like this.
  4. Ask a family member to review the offer before accepting a task.
  5. Report the account to the platform where it contacted you.

If you already paid or shared a code

  1. Call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in with the chat and payment ids.
  2. Tell your bank on the number printed on your card about the transfers and any cheque.
  3. Contact the gift card issuer through its official support about any codes shared.
  4. Stop all contact and do not accept the 'second assignment'.

National Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930. Report online at cybercrime.gov.in. Do it fast: the sooner your bank is told, the better the chance that money can be held.

How Safeavio helps

Safeavio's scam check can read the task message you paste and mark the pay-in-advance and the gift card request, and Money Shield's checklist reminds you to verify before you send money, with a family code word for asking someone you trust. It cannot confirm whether a payment has really reached your account, so look at your own banking app. Never forward money first.

Check it before you tap or pay

Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions people ask

Is mystery shopping real?

Some market research firms do use shoppers, but they do not send money first and then ask you to forward it. Genuine work does not need your own money, gift cards or a quick transfer.

Why do they send money before asking me to send some back?

The money they send is fake or will be reversed, so the part you send is your own. The scam only works if you act before the first payment is checked. Waiting for the bank's confirmation, not a screenshot, is the safe test.

What if a cheque was deposited?

A cheque can be shown as credited and then bounce days later. Do not spend or forward any part until the bank confirms it has cleared, and tell the bank if you suspect fraud. Keep the cheque slip and the deposit receipt for the report.
