Business Loan Subsidy and Mudra Agent Scam
An agent promises a business loan or subsidy under a government scheme and takes a fee or margin money first. See how small entrepreneurs are cheated.
Aspiring shop owners and women entrepreneurs hear about easy business loans and subsidies. An agent promises a sanction within days and asks for a processing fee, 'margin money' or an insurance premium in advance. The loan never comes, or a different, costly product is sold. The person loses the fee and the documents given, and sometimes carries a debt taken in their name.
How the scam works
The agent advertises on social media and in local groups with the name of a real scheme. He asks for the business plan, Aadhaar, PAN and bank statements, and says the bank will approve quickly through his contact. A professional-looking sanction letter with a number and a stamp may be shown, so the applicant believes the loan is already approved.
He then asks for fees in steps: file charge, processing fee, stamp paper, insurance and 'margin money' of ten to twenty percent so that the bank releases the loan. Each payment is said to be adjustable later. The pressure is that the sanction expires, the subsidy quota is nearly full or the officer is about to be transferred. Payments are demanded to a personal account.
The payoff is the total of these fees. In some cases the agent uses the documents to take a personal loan or a loan app credit in the applicant's name and keeps the money. When the victim asks for the loan disbursal, the agent says the bank has rejected it and refuses to refund. The person loses savings and may start getting recovery calls for a debt not taken.
An example of what you may see
Example message (invented): 'Congratulations, your Mudra loan of Rs 5,00,000 is sanctioned at 4 percent subsidy. To release the amount, send Rs 12,000 processing fee and Rs 40,000 margin money to this account today. Your sanction letter is attached. The bank officer is transferred on Friday, so the file must be cleared by then.' The attached letter has no bank branch address or contact. A second message adds: 'Aadhaar, PAN aur 6 mahine ka bank statement abhi bhej dijiye, warna sanction cancel ho jayega.'
This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

How Safeavio helps
Safeavio's scam check can read an agent's message and mark the fee-first and the transfer-deadline pressure, and Money Shield offers a checklist and a family code word to pause before a payment. The link check can warn about a lookalike scheme portal. It cannot tell if a loan is sanctioned, which only the bank can confirm at its own branch.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions people ask
Do banks take margin money through an agent?
No. Any charge is communicated by the bank in writing and paid to the bank's own account. A request for margin money to a personal account through an agent is a strong sign of fraud.
How do I apply for a scheme loan safely?
Visit the bank branch or use the official scheme portal yourself and keep all application receipts. Ask the branch to confirm any sanction letter you receive. Ask a family member to come with you the first time, because the branch staff can explain each step and the charges clearly.
Can an agent use my documents for another loan?
Yes. Copies of Aadhaar, PAN and bank statements can be used to apply elsewhere. Give them only to the bank, and check your credit report occasionally for loans you did not take. Check your credit report every few months.
