Google Maps Review Reward Scam
You are paid a few rupees to review places on a map app, then asked to deposit money for 'higher tasks'. See how review jobs turn into a deposit trap.
A message offers money for giving five-star reviews to hotels and restaurants on a maps app. After a few small, genuine payouts of Rs 50 or Rs 100, you are added to a Telegram group and told that higher-paying 'merchant tasks' need a deposit. The deposits grow, withdrawals are blocked, and the group goes quiet. The review work is only a way to build trust before the real demand for money.
How the scam works
The scammer sends the offer in bulk by SMS or WhatsApp, saying you can earn daily by reviewing places from your phone. The first tasks are real and the first payouts arrive within minutes. A screenshot of a screen with your small earnings and a message of praise from other members in the group create the belief that the job is legitimate.
Then a 'mentor' announces a premium task that needs a deposit and promises the money back with a commission. The first deposit returns with a small profit. Larger ones follow, with excuses such as 'system error', 'wrong order' or 'account frozen' when you cannot withdraw. You are asked to pay more to unlock the previous amount.
The payoff is the deposits, which grow from a few hundred rupees to tens of thousands in a few days. The scammer also gets your bank details and phone number, and may keep selling you 'recovery' services. When you refuse to pay, you are removed from the group. Because the first payments were real, many victims blame themselves and stay silent.
An example of what you may see
Example message (invented): 'Earn Rs 3,000 a day by rating restaurants on the map app. Join our group on Telegram. First task: give 5 stars to 3 places and send the screenshot to get Rs 150 now.' Later the mentor writes: 'Premium merchant task available: deposit Rs 10,000, get Rs 13,500 in 20 minutes. Your account is frozen, send another Rs 15,000 to unlock the amount before the system closes today.'
This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.
Red flags
- Payment for reviews or ratings of places or products.
- Small early payouts followed by a request for a deposit.
- A group that cheers each member's earnings.
- A frozen account that needs more money to unlock.
- A mentor who guides each payment and sets short deadlines.
- Payment to different personal accounts for each task.
What to do right now
- Stop and do not send any deposit. A real job does not charge to work.
- Leave the group and do not follow instructions from the mentor.
- Take screenshots of the chat and the payments for a complaint.
- Tell a family member, even if you feel embarrassed.
- Report the number on Sanchar Saathi using Chakshu and report the group to the platform.
If you already paid or shared a code
- Call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in with the account numbers, UPI IDs and chat.
- Tell your bank on the number printed on your card and ask about holding the transfers.
- Do not pay a 'recovery agent' who contacts you after the loss.
- File a written complaint at the police station and keep every screenshot.

How Safeavio helps
Safeavio's scam check can read the job message or the mentor's chat you paste and mark the small-payout-then-deposit pattern, the frozen-account demand and the pressure, and Money Shield's checklist asks you to pause before sending money. It cannot read a Telegram group on its own and cannot get money back, so stop at the first deposit request. Leaving early is the best defence.
Check it before you tap or pay

Questions people ask
Why do they pay me at first?
The early payments are a small cost to build trust. Once you believe the job is real, you are asked for larger deposits, and the money you put in never returns. Treat the small early payment as the price of the hook, not as a sign of honesty.
Is there any genuine job that asks for a deposit to work?
No. Employers pay you for work. A job that needs you to deposit money, unlock an account or pay a fee to withdraw your own earnings is a scam. This holds even when the task is described as a merchant or premium one.
Can I get the deposited money back?
Report to 1930 and cybercrime.gov.in quickly, with account details and chats. Recovery is not guaranteed, and anyone who promises it for a fee is another scammer. Keep screenshots of the group, the deposits and the account details, because they are the main evidence the police can use.
