Google Maps Review Reward Scam by SMS

How it looks by SMS, the red flags and what to do.

On SMS the scammer has only a few lines to work with, so they use a deadline, a threat or a prize and a link that must be tapped "now". Google Maps Review Reward Scam is one of the ways this shows up: You are paid a few rupees to review places on a map app, then asked to deposit money for 'higher tasks'. What google maps review reward scam looks like by SMS

• A sender name that resembles a bank, courier, tax or utility, or an ordinary mobile number.
• A very short message with a deadline such as "today" or "within 24 hours".
• A shortened or oddly spelled link that does not match the real website.

The scammer sends the offer in bulk by SMS or WhatsApp, saying you can earn daily by reviewing places from your phone. The first tasks are real and the first payouts arrive within minutes. A screenshot of a screen with your small earnings and a message of praise from other members in the group create the belief that the job is legitimate.

Red flags to check on the text message

• Payment for reviews or ratings of places or products.
• Small early payouts followed by a request for a deposit.
• A group that cheers each member's earnings.
• A frozen account that needs more money to unlock.
• It tells you to install an app from a link instead of the official store.
• The link domain is not the one you type yourself for that organisation.

What to do

1. Stop and do not send any deposit. A real job does not charge to work.
2. Leave the group and do not follow instructions from the mentor.
3. Take screenshots of the chat and the payments for a complaint.
4. Report the sender on the Sanchar Saathi portal (Chakshu facility) and block the number.
5. Delete the message and tell family members who may get the same text.
6. Do not reply, do not tap the link and do not call the number in the message.

If money or a code is already gone

1. Call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in with the account numbers, UPI IDs and chat.
2. Tell your bank on the number printed on your card and ask about holding the transfers.
3. Do not pay a 'recovery agent' who contacts you after the loss.
4. File a written complaint at the police station and keep every screenshot.
