Re 1 UPI ID Verification Scam

A stranger asks you to send Re 1 or Rs 10 to verify your UPI ID before a bigger payment. The small test is used to hook you into a larger loss.

A buyer, employer or 'agent' says they need to confirm that your UPI ID works, so please send Re 1 first and they will return it with the full amount. The small sum feels harmless, but it hands over your name, your UPI ID and your trust, and it is the first step in a script that ends with a much larger demand.

How the scam works

The scammer opens with a plausible reason for a test payment: a job registration, an advance for goods, a prize or a refund. They say their system needs a Re 1 or Rs 10 transfer from you to match your UPI ID with their records. The request is so small that few people refuse, and sending it makes you feel you have already started the deal.

After you pay, they thank you and send a screenshot of a 'return payment' or a message saying the verification passed and the main amount is pending. The next step is a larger test, a fee or a collect request, each explained as a technical rule. Your own small payment is used to argue that you have agreed and that stopping now would waste it.

The amounts rise a step at a time: Re 1, then Rs 100, then Rs 1,000, then a 'security deposit'. The scammer stops only when you run out of patience or balance. Along the way they also collect your UPI name and number, which can be reused in other scripts against you or sold on to other fraud groups.

An example of what you may see

Example only: 'Welcome aboard, your data entry job is confirmed. Before we send the first salary we must verify your UPI ID. Please send Re 1 to this ID and we will return Rs 500 immediately. After that, send Rs 200 as a registration charge, which will be refunded with your first week of pay. Please reply done with the screenshot once you have paid.' Each step comes with a screenshot of a 'return', but no return ever lands in your own account.

This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

How Safeavio helps

Safeavio's Money Shield checklist asks questions before you pay a stranger, including whether you were asked to pay in order to receive money or a job. You can also paste the chat into the scam check to see reasons such as an advance fee and urgency. Safeavio cannot confirm a job or buyer is real, so use official channels to verify.

Check it before you tap or pay

Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions people ask

Is a Re 1 verification payment ever required?

Genuine buyers and employers do not need you to pay to prove your UPI ID. A real payer sends money to you and you simply wait for the credit. A request for a test payment from you is a sign of fraud.

What harm can a Re 1 payment do?

The amount is small, but it shows the scammer that you respond, and it leaks your name and UPI ID. It is also the first step in a series of bigger payments. Stop at the first request.

How can I check whether a job or buyer is real?

Look up the company on its own website typed by hand, use the contact method printed there, and ask for a written offer. Do not pay anything to join, and do not rely only on chat messages.
