Smart Meter Installation UPI Trap Scam
A caller says your meter must be changed to a smart meter today and sends a QR or app for a fee. See how the trap works and how to check safely.
As electricity boards talk about smart meters, scammers use the news. A caller, SMS or even a man at the door says your meter must be replaced today or the connection will be cut, and a fee must be paid by scanning a QR code or installing a helper app. The payment goes to a personal account and the app can read bank messages. No change was ever ordered by your board.
How the scam works
The scammer says he is a contractor or an engineer from the electricity office. He knows your area, sometimes the consumer name from a bill photo, and says the old meter will be deactivated. The call or visit feels routine because the idea of a meter change is already familiar from public announcements. He may also send a photo of an ID badge that looks official but cannot be verified.
He demands a small installation or 'security' fee, paid at once by UPI to confirm the slot. If you hesitate, he warns that the connection will be disconnected by evening. To finish, he asks you to install an app for 'consumer verification' or to scan a QR with your PIN, which pulls money out rather than putting any in.
The payoff is the fee plus whatever the helper app can reach. Some victims lose the full balance of the account, because the app reads OTPs or shares the screen. Others lose a few hundred rupees and also hand over consumer numbers, which are used again in a 'bill pending' trick. Some victims lose their savings because the helper app stays on the phone long after the fee is paid.
An example of what you may see
Example call (invented): 'Sir, main bijli vibhag se bol raha hoon. Aapka purana meter aaj hi smart meter se badalna hai, warna connection kat jayega. Rs 1,200 installation fee abhi is QR par bhej dijiye aur yeh app install kar lijiye, engineer shaam ko aa jayega.' He repeats: 'Engineer shaam 6 baje aayega, uske pehle fee jama kijiye, nahi to line kat jayegi.' Then he sends another message with a payment request in a different name.
This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.
Red flags
- A same-day meter change with a disconnection threat.
- Fees demanded over UPI, QR or a link before any work.
- A helper app requested to verify the consumer.
- The caller cannot give a written order or work reference.
- The payment goes to a personal UPI ID, not an official counter or portal.
- He avoids letting you check at your local electricity office.
What to do right now
- Do not pay or install anything on a call or visit.
- Check the matter at your electricity board's official app or website typed by hand.
- Ask for an identity card and written order, and call the office using the number on your bill.
- Pay bills only through the board's own channels.
- Report the number on Sanchar Saathi using Chakshu.
If you already paid or shared a code
- Call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in at once.
- Ask your bank, on the number on your card, to block UPI and net banking.
- Remove any installed app and change your passwords from a clean phone.
- Tell the electricity office and keep the QR, number and payment record.

How Safeavio helps
Safeavio's QR check shows where a QR code leads before you scan it, and the scam check reads a pasted SMS or chat for disconnection threats and fee demands. The Phone scan lists apps from outside a store and the permissions they hold. It cannot tell whether your board is running a real meter programme, so confirm that on the official app or at the office.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions people ask
Does the electricity board collect meter fees by UPI on a call?
Do not assume so. Check on the board's official app, website or office, and pay only through those channels. A caller who pushes a personal QR or app is not following a normal process. Check the board's official website first.
What if a man actually comes to my door?
Ask for a photo ID and a written order, and call your local office on the number printed on the bill. Do not pay him on the spot or let him install any app. A genuine engineer will not mind a call to the local office.
Can my power really be cut at once?
A genuine disconnection follows a written notice and the board's own process. A phone threat of tonight is a pressure tactic. Check your bill status on the official app. Pay no one without a written bill.
