Wallet Top-up Cashback Scam

A website or caller promises double balance or big cashback if you top up your wallet. The money goes to the scammer, not your wallet.

Adverts and messages say that if you add Rs 500 to your wallet you will get Rs 1,000, or that a special agent can load bonus balance. It sounds like a festive offer, but the top-up goes to a personal account or a fake page and no bonus ever appears. Genuine wallets show their offers only inside their own app and do not use private agents.

How the scam works

The scammer posts a short video, a social media advert or a group message with a limited-time top-up offer. It uses screenshots of other people receiving the bonus and comments from fake accounts saying it worked. A link or a contact asks you to send money to a UPI ID or to 'register' on a page that looks like a wallet app.

After the first payment, the scammer sends a screenshot that shows a bigger wallet balance. It may come from an edited image or a fake page, and the number looks convincing. They then tell you to add more to unlock the bonus or to reach a higher 'tier'. They also warn that the offer will end soon, so you hurry.

When you try to use or withdraw the balance, nothing is there. The scammer then asks for a fee, tax or identity proof, or stops replying. The money you sent is moved on at once. Your phone number and UPI ID are also saved and used for future calls and fake requests, so the trouble may continue after the first loss.

An example of what you may see

Example only: 'Festival offer! Top up your wallet with Rs 1,000 through our agent and receive Rs 2,500 balance. Send the money to the UPI ID below and share your wallet number. Limited to 50 users today. Many have already received the bonus, see screenshots in the group. Hurry, offer ends at midnight.' The agent never shows the offer inside the official app, and replies only with edited screenshots and a deadline. When you ask for the terms, he says a longer wait will cancel your bonus. He also asks you to share the group link.

This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

How Safeavio helps

Safeavio's scam check can read the offer text you paste and show the reasons it looks like pressure and a money demand, and the link check can warn about lookalike or shortened links in the advert. Money Shield reminds you to pay only through the official app. It cannot tell whether a particular offer is real, so check inside the app.

Check it before you tap or pay

Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions people ask

Can a wallet really double my balance?

Genuine wallet offers are shown inside the official app and are usually small cashbacks with clear terms. An agent who doubles money for a private payment is not part of any official offer, and the money is lost.

Why do scammers show screenshots of others getting the bonus?

To build trust. The images can be edited and the comments can come from fake accounts. Treat such proof as part of the advert, not as evidence, and check inside the official app instead. Look at the offer inside the app.

What if the agent asks for more money to release my balance?

Stop paying. A fee to release a bonus is the way the scam continues. Save the chat, tell your bank, call 1930, and report on the cyber crime portal. More payments will not bring the first one back.
