Wallet Top-up Cashback Scam on WhatsApp
How it looks on WhatsApp, the red flags and what to do.
WhatsApp scams arrive from numbers you do not know, from a friend whose account was taken over, or from a group you were added to without asking. Wallet Top-up Cashback Scam is one of the ways this shows up: A website or caller promises double balance or big cashback if you top up your wallet. The money goes to the scammer, not your wallet.
What wallet top-up cashback scam looks like on WhatsApp
- A friend or relative asking for urgent money from a new number or a hacked account.
- A group invite promising returns, jobs or prizes.
- A PDF, APK or image that must be opened to "see the details".
The scammer posts a short video, a social media advert or a group message with a limited-time top-up offer. It uses screenshots of other people receiving the bonus and comments from fake accounts saying it worked. A link or a contact asks you to send money to a UPI ID or to 'register' on a page that looks like a wallet app.
Red flags to check on the WhatsApp message
- The offer doubles or triples the amount you pay.
- You are asked to pay a private UPI ID instead of using the app.
- Screenshots and comments show others 'proving' it works.
- A limited number of users or a midnight deadline is mentioned.
- You are added to a group full of people praising profits.
- The sender moves you quickly to Telegram or to a second app.
What to do
- Do not send money to a private UPI ID for a bonus.
- Check offers only inside the official wallet app.
- Do not share your wallet login or OTP with an agent.
- If it was a "friend", call them on the number you already have and ask.
- Turn on two-step verification in WhatsApp settings so a stolen SMS code is not enough.
- Warn the group or family, and report the number on Sanchar Saathi if it is a scam call or message.
Inside WhatsApp use Block and report; for numbers that call or text you, the Sanchar Saathi portal (Chakshu facility) also takes complaints.
