WhatsApp scams arrive from numbers you do not know, from a friend whose account was taken over, or from a group you were added to without asking. Smart Meter Installation UPI Trap Scam is one of the ways this shows up: A caller says your meter must be changed to a smart meter today and sends a QR or app for a fee. See how the trap works and how to check safely.
What smart meter installation upi trap scam looks like on WhatsApp
- A link that pretends to be a wa.me, courier or bank page.
- A message from an unknown number, often with a stock photo of a smiling person.
- A friend or relative asking for urgent money from a new number or a hacked account.
The scammer says he is a contractor or an engineer from the electricity office. He knows your area, sometimes the consumer name from a bill photo, and says the old meter will be deactivated. The call or visit feels routine because the idea of a meter change is already familiar from public announcements. He may also send a photo of an ID badge that looks official but cannot be verified.
Red flags to check on the WhatsApp message
- A same-day meter change with a disconnection threat.
- Fees demanded over UPI, QR or a link before any work.
- A helper app requested to verify the consumer.
- The caller cannot give a written order or work reference.
- Someone asks for the six-digit code WhatsApp sent you by SMS.
- A new number says it is someone you know and asks for money; call the real person on the old number first.
What to do
- Do not pay or install anything on a call or visit.
- Check the matter at your electricity board's official app or website typed by hand.
- Ask for an identity card and written order, and call the office using the number on your bill.
- Turn on two-step verification in WhatsApp settings so a stolen SMS code is not enough.
- Warn the group or family, and report the number on Sanchar Saathi if it is a scam call or message.
- Do not click links or open files. Do not send money or codes.
Inside WhatsApp use Block and report; for numbers that call or text you, the Sanchar Saathi portal (Chakshu facility) also takes complaints.
If money or a code is already gone
- Call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in at once.

- Remove any installed app and change your passwords from a clean phone.
- Tell the electricity office and keep the QR, number and payment record.

Safeavio's QR check shows where a QR code leads before you scan it, and the scam check reads a pasted SMS or chat for disconnection threats and fee demands. The Phone scan lists apps from outside a store and the permissions they hold. It cannot tell whether your board is running a real meter programme, so confirm that on the official app or at the office.
Check it before you tap or pay
