Re 1 UPI ID Verification Scam over the phone

How it looks over the phone, the red flags and what to do.

On a call the pressure is live: no time to read, no time to check, and a rule that you must not tell anyone. Re 1 UPI ID Verification Scam is one of the ways this shows up: A stranger asks you to send Re 1 or Rs 10 to verify your UPI ID before a bigger payment. The small test is used to hook you into a larger loss.

What re 1 upi id verification scam looks like over the phone

• Instructions to install a screen-sharing app or to press keys on the phone.
• A second "senior officer" who takes over the call.
• An unknown or international number, or a number that looks like a real office.

The scammer opens with a plausible reason for a test payment: a job registration, an advance for goods, a prize or a refund. They say their system needs a Re 1 or Rs 10 transfer from you to match your UPI ID with their records. The request is so small that few people refuse, and sending it makes you feel you have already started the deal.

Red flags to check on the phone call

• A stranger asks for a small test payment before any real transaction.
• The test amount keeps growing step by step.
• Refunds are promised only after more payments.
• The reason is a 'system rule' you cannot check.
• You are told to keep the call secret.
• The caller wants you to install an app to "fix" something.

What to do

1. Stop paying and do not send another test amount.
2. Tell the person you will check with the official company or app.
3. Search the company's own website, typed by hand, for the process.
4. Never share an OTP or PIN. No genuine staff member needs it.
5. If you already installed an app on the call, uninstall it and switch on airplane mode, then call your bank at once.
6. Tell a family member and report the number on the Sanchar Saathi portal (Chakshu facility).

If money or a code is already gone

1. Call 1930 and give the transaction IDs and the receiver's UPI ID.
2. Tell your bank using the number on your card or passbook.
3. Report on https://cybercrime.gov.in with screenshots of the chat.
4. Do not send any further money to recover the earlier amounts.
