Re 1 UPI ID Verification Scam through an app

How it looks through an app, the red flags and what to do.

A fake app can be installed from a link, from a file sent on chat or even from a lookalike listing. Once on your phone it can ask for powerful permissions. Re 1 UPI ID Verification Scam is one of the ways this shows up: A stranger asks you to send Re 1 or Rs 10 to verify your UPI ID before a bigger payment. The small test is used to hook you into a larger loss.

What re 1 upi id verification scam looks like through an app

• An app outside the official store that asks for many permissions.
• A screen-sharing or remote-control app that a caller asks you to install.
• A loan app that asks for contacts and photos.

The scammer opens with a plausible reason for a test payment: a job registration, an advance for goods, a prize or a refund. They say their system needs a Re 1 or Rs 10 transfer from you to match your UPI ID with their records. The request is so small that few people refuse, and sending it makes you feel you have already started the deal.

Red flags to check on the app

• A stranger asks for a small test payment before any real transaction.
• The test amount keeps growing step by step.
• Refunds are promised only after more payments.
• The reason is a 'system rule' you cannot check.
• It has few or odd reviews, or a name with spelling changes.
• It asks you to turn off Play Protect.

What to do

1. Stop paying and do not send another test amount.
2. Tell the person you will check with the official company or app.
3. Search the company's own website, typed by hand, for the process.
4. Open Settings and check Accessibility, Device admin apps and Install unknown apps for anything you do not recognise.
5. Change the passwords of your bank and email from a clean device if the app had access.
6. Run a phone scan (Safeavio Sentinel lists risky apps and settings).

Report the fake app to the store it came from and, if money moved, call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in.

If money or a code is already gone

1. Call 1930 and give the transaction IDs and the receiver's UPI ID.
2. Tell your bank using the number on your card or passbook.
3. Report on https://cybercrime.gov.in with screenshots of the chat.
4. Do not send any further money to recover the earlier amounts.
