Advance Fee Loan Approval Scam
A loan is approved without checks, but you must first pay processing, insurance or GST. After you pay, new fees follow and no loan arrives.
You get a call or message saying a loan of Rs 3 lakh is pre-approved with no documents and no credit check. Everything seems quick and friendly until you hear that a processing fee, insurance or tax has to be paid first. Each fee is described as refundable or deducted from the loan. After you pay, there is always another reason for another payment. The loan itself does not exist.
How the scam works
The scammer contacts you with an offer that suits your needs. Perhaps you searched for a loan online or filled a lead form on an ad page that sold your number. The caller is warm and knows a few details. They send a sanction letter with a logo and a reference number to look genuine, and say that your file just needs a final step before the money is released.
The pressure builds around that final step. You are asked to pay a processing fee of one or two per cent, then insurance, then a charge for a clearance certificate or for being a first-time borrower. Each is explained in a different official-sounding way. The caller says that if you stop now, you lose what you have already paid, which pushes you to continue.
The payoff is the series of advance fees. Payments go to personal accounts or wallets that change from step to step. When you ask for the loan amount to be reduced by the fee, or want to speak to someone senior, you get excuses. Eventually the phone is switched off. Real lenders deduct fees from the loan amount or show them in a clear agreement, and never ask you to pay a stranger's UPI first.
An example of what you may see
Example call (invented): 'Congratulations, your loan of Rs 3,00,000 is approved. No documents needed. To release it, pay Rs 6,500 processing fee today. After that insurance of Rs 9,000 is required, and then a clearance certificate charge. All amounts are refundable and will be adjusted in your first EMI.' The repeated fees, the personal UPI and the claim of refundability are the usual script. Look at who benefits if you act without thinking.
This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

Questions people ask
Can a lender charge a processing fee?
Genuine lenders may charge fees, but they show them in a written agreement and usually deduct them from the loan or bill them clearly. They do not ask you to pay a private UPI ID before any money arrives.
Why does the approval come so fast without documents?
Real lending involves checks. A quick approval with no checks is bait to get you to pay a fee. The sanction letter can be made in minutes by anyone. Slow, careful checks beat quick replies every time.
What if I paid one fee already?
Stop paying more. Each new fee has a new excuse. Report through 1930 and cybercrime.gov.in as soon as possible and keep every receipt and message. Take your time and check before acting. A short pause costs nothing and can save a lot.
