How to keep your phone hotspot safe with a strong password
Set a strong hotspot name and password, choose the right security type, and limit who joins when you share your mobile data.
When you share mobile data from your phone, anyone who guesses the password can join, use your data and be on the same network as your devices. Many hotspots still have an easy default. A few minutes in settings protect your data pack and your phone. Here is a short, clear routine.
Steps
- Open the hotspot settings. Open Settings, search for Hotspot or Tethering, and open the Wi-Fi hotspot or Portable hotspot page. Make a note of the current name and password before you change them. Menu names differ slightly on Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and OnePlus phones.
- Change the network name. Use a plain name that does not include your full name, phone number or address. Do not use a name that looks like a shop or a station network.
- Pick strong security. Choose WPA2 or WPA3 if available. Never leave the hotspot open with no password. Open hotspots let anyone nearby join, use your data and see devices that share the connection.
- Set a long, unique password. Use at least 12 characters with words you can remember but others cannot guess. Do not use your phone number, birthday or 12345678. Never reuse a bank or email password.
- Limit connected devices and time. Where the phone allows it, set a maximum number of devices and an automatic switch-off when nobody is connected. Look at the list of connected devices and remove any you do not know.
- Switch it off when done. Turn the hotspot off after use. A running hotspot uses battery and data, and it remains open to guessing. Change the password if you shared it with someone you do not trust.
Menu names differ a little between phone makers and Android versions. If you cannot find a setting, open Settings and use the search box.
Why it matters
A weak hotspot password can let a neighbour or a stranger use your data, slow your connection and, in the worst case, reach devices you share it with. Strong settings take a minute. They also protect your laptop or a family member's phone when you tether in a hotel or on a trip.
Watch out for
- Do not share the hotspot password in a public group.
- A hotspot named after you tells others who is near.
- Do not leave it on overnight.
- Do not allow unknown devices because they look friendly.
How Safeavio helps
Safeavio's Wi-Fi safety check and network alerts can help you notice risky network signs on the phone. They do not set your hotspot password, and they cannot stop someone who already knows it or tell you who is using your hotspot. Change the password in your phone's own hotspot settings.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions
How long should a hotspot password be?
Aim for at least 12 characters. A few unrelated words with a number are easier to remember than random symbols and still hard to guess. Avoid anything linked to your name, number or birth date.
Can someone use my hotspot to hack my phone?
A strong password and WPA2 or WPA3 security make that unlikely. The main risks are people using your data and joining your network. Keep your phone updated and remove devices you do not know.
