What to do in the first hour after your phone is stolen in India
A calm, ordered plan for the first hour after phone theft in India: lock it, block the SIM, secure UPI and bank apps, then report it.
When a phone is stolen, the first hour matters most because your SIM, UPI apps, email and WhatsApp are all inside it. Do not panic and do not chase the thief. Work through this list in order, using a friend's phone or a computer. Each step closes one door a thief could use to reach your money or your accounts.
Steps
- Call or message the phone from another phone. Ring your number once or twice. If an honest person has it, they may answer. If the phone is off or switched off, stop. Never go alone to meet someone who says they found it.
- Try locate, ring or lock from another device. On a friend's phone or a computer, sign in to your Google account and open Find Hub. If the phone is online you can play a sound, lock it or show a message. Menu names differ slightly on Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and OnePlus phones.
- Get your SIM blocked. Ask your mobile company to block the SIM and issue a duplicate. Use the number from your bill, the company's official app or its website typed by hand, not a number from a search result or a stranger.
- Secure bank and UPI access. Contact your bank through the number printed on your card or passbook and ask them to block UPI, mobile banking and cards if you see any sign of misuse. Do this early because UPI is tied to your SIM.
- Change passwords from another device. Change the password of your Google account first, then email, WhatsApp, social media and shopping apps. Sign out of all other devices where the option exists. Use a computer or a trusted person's phone.
- Report it and note the IMEI. Report the theft to the police and keep a copy of the complaint. Share your IMEI number, which is printed on the phone box or shown in your Google account device list. Ask how the phone can be blocked on the national system.
- Watch your accounts for a few days. Check bank messages, email alerts and WhatsApp for sign-in warnings. If any money leaves your account, call the national helpline 1930 quickly and report at cybercrime.gov.in.
Menu names differ a little between phone makers and Android versions. If you cannot find a setting, open Settings and use the search box.
Why it matters
Thieves often try to use a stolen phone before the owner reacts. A phone with an active SIM can receive OTPs, reset passwords and open payment apps. Acting in the first hour does not guarantee you get the phone back, but it greatly reduces the chance that someone drains your accounts or pretends to be you to your family and friends.
Watch out for
- Never share an OTP with anyone who calls offering to help get your phone back.
- Do not click links in messages that claim your phone has been found.
- Do not pay anyone to return the phone.
- Do not post your number and a reward on social media without thinking about scammers.
How Safeavio helps
If Safeavio was already set up on the phone, you can use the portal at safeavio.com to locate, ring, lock the phone and show a lost-mode message. A SIM-change alert can warn you if the SIM is swapped. It cannot help if the thief switches the phone off, and it cannot recover money.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions
Should I block the SIM first or lock the phone first?
Do whichever you can finish fastest. If the phone is still online, locking it from Find Hub takes under a minute. Block the SIM right after, because the SIM can receive OTPs for UPI and password resets even when the phone is locked.
Will the police find my phone?
Nobody can promise that. Still, a complaint with your IMEI gives you a record that your bank, mobile company and insurer may ask for. It also lets the phone be flagged so it is harder to use in India.
