How to manage location history and precise location on Android
Control where Android stores your location trail, switch apps to approximate location and stop apps from tracking you in the background.
Your phone can record where you go, and apps can ask for your exact position. This helps with maps and delivery, but it also builds a detailed record of your life. You can limit both. Here is how to review location access and your timeline. Menu names differ slightly on Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and OnePlus phones.
Steps
- Open Location settings. Open Settings, then Location. You will see an on/off switch and a list of app access. If you cannot find it, search Settings for Location. Turning it off completely stops all apps from seeing it.
- Review app location access. Tap App location permissions or Location services, depending on your phone. Each app shows Allowed all the time, Allowed only while in use, Ask every time or Not allowed.
- Pick approximate where possible. On Android 12 and later, open an app and look for Use precise location. Turn it off for weather, shopping and news apps. Keep it on only for maps, cabs and delivery.
- Stop background tracking. For apps that say Allowed all the time, change them to Allowed only while in use unless you truly need background tracking, such as a family safety app you chose yourself.
- Review your Google location history. Open your Google account page in the Google app or Settings, then Manage your Google Account, Data and privacy, and find Timeline or Location History. Pause it or set automatic deletion.
Menu names differ a little between phone makers and Android versions. If you cannot find a setting, open Settings and use the search box.
Why it matters
Location data shows where you live, work and worship. Stalkers, data brokers and unsafe apps can use it, and a fake delivery or loan app may collect it quietly. Setting apps to approximate or while-in-use limits that trail of places and times and reduces the damage if an app is sold or hacked.
Watch out for
- Turning location off may stop emergency features and find-my-phone from helping you.
- A flashlight or wallpaper app asking for location is suspicious.
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning can still reveal position on some phones, so check Location services.
- Photos may carry location details when you share them.
How Safeavio helps
Safeavio's permission review helps you notice which apps ask for sensitive access like location, so you can decide what to trim. Family location and safe places only work with the people you invite, and the portal shows a phone's location only if the person shares it. Everything is opt-in.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions
Does turning off location history stop Google Maps from working?
No. Maps still works for directions. Only the saved timeline of places you have been stops. You can delete older entries separately in your Google account.
Is approximate location enough for most apps?
Yes for weather, news and shopping. Cab, delivery and navigation apps need precise location, so allow it for those only while using the app.
