WhatsApp disappearing messages and View once: when to use them
Set a default timer so chats vanish after a day, a week or ninety days, and learn what View once photos can and cannot protect on WhatsApp.
Disappearing messages remove chat text after a set time, and View once media can be opened only once. They help when you share sensitive details, but they are not a guarantee. A person can still screenshot or photograph the screen. Menu names differ slightly on Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and OnePlus phones.
Steps
- Turn it on for one chat. Open a chat, tap the contact or group name at the top, then Disappearing messages. Choose 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days. New messages will vanish after that time.
- Set a default for new chats. Go to Settings, then Privacy, then Default message timer. Choose a duration. All new individual chats will use it, but existing chats stay as they are until you change them.
- Use it for sensitive items. Turn it on when sharing an address, OTP-type code or ID copy with someone you trust. Delete the original file from your gallery afterwards because a saved copy does not disappear.
- Use View once for photos. When you send a photo or video, tap the 1 icon before sending. The receiver can open it once. Use it for documents like a cheque photo, and do not trust that it cannot be captured.
- Know the limits. A person can take a screenshot, record the screen or photograph it with another phone. Chat backups made before the timer may keep copies. Treat the feature as tidy-up, not secrecy.
Menu names differ a little between phone makers and Android versions. If you cannot find a setting, open Settings and use the search box.
Why it matters
Old chats hold account numbers, photos and family details. If your phone is lost, shared or hacked, that history can be read. Messages that clean themselves up reduce what is there to find. It also makes scammers' screenshots of old chats less useful, but you must still avoid sharing secrets you cannot afford to lose.
Watch out for
- A group admin may let anyone turn timers on or off.
- Disappearing messages do not stop forwarding or screenshots.
- Do not send an OTP, PIN or CVV to anyone, timer or not.
- Scammers sometimes ask you to turn it on to hide their messages from you.
How Safeavio helps
Safeavio's Scam check explains a message you paste or share, even one that will disappear, so save the text before the timer ends if you want it checked. Privacy tools include data export and delete, and secure delete. It cannot recover messages that are gone.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions
Do disappearing messages vanish for both people?
Yes, they are removed for everyone in the chat after the timer. The other person can still copy or screenshot them before then, so share only what you are comfortable with.
Why would a scammer ask me to turn it on?
To remove evidence of their demands. If someone you do not know asks for this, treat it as a warning. Save screenshots and report the number before the messages are gone.
