What to do right after you click a suspicious link
You tapped a link and now feel uneasy. Follow these steps to limit the damage, from closing the page to changing passwords.
It happens to careful people. You tap a link in an SMS or WhatsApp message and realise it looks wrong. Do not panic. Most of the time, nothing happens unless you then enter details or install something. The steps below help you check, clean up and protect your accounts in a calm order.
Steps
- Close the page and do not enter anything. Close the browser tab or app. Do not type any password, OTP, card number or UPI PIN. If a download started, do not open the file. Do not tap anything on the page.
- Check whether anything was installed. Open Settings, then Apps, and look for apps you do not recognise or that were added today. Uninstall them. Menu names differ slightly on Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and OnePlus phones.
- Look at your downloads. Open the Downloads folder and delete any file you did not choose, especially app files. Do not open them. If the page asked you to install an update or app, do not follow it.
- Change passwords if you typed any. If you entered a password anywhere, change it at once from a safe device, along with any account that shares it. If you typed card or UPI details, tell your bank using the number on your card.
- Scan and review the phone. Run Google Play Protect and a security scan. Look at which apps have special access, such as accessibility or device admin. Remove anything that you did not give on purpose.
- Report and watch your accounts. Report the message on the Sanchar Saathi portal under Chakshu. Watch bank and email alerts for a few days. If money moved, call 1930 quickly and report at cybercrime.gov.in.
Menu names differ a little between phone makers and Android versions. If you cannot find a setting, open Settings and use the search box.
Why it matters
A bad link does the most harm in the minutes afterwards, because that is when people enter details or follow instructions on the fake page. Knowing what to check turns a worrying moment into a short routine. Most clicks cause no harm, so the aim is to stay calm and close each risk in order.
Watch out for
- Do not call a number shown on the suspicious page.
- A page that asks you to install something is a trap.
- Do not ignore a bank alert after clicking.
- Never share an OTP to cancel a payment you did not make.
How Safeavio helps
Safeavio's phone scan reviews installed apps, permissions, risky settings and apps outside a store, which helps after an accidental click. Its link check can look at a link before you open the next one. It does not remove malware by itself, and it cannot recover money.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions
Can my phone be hacked just by clicking a link?
It is rare. The usual harm comes after the click, when you enter details on a fake page or install an app. Close the page, enter nothing, and check your apps and accounts as described here.
Should I factory reset after a bad click?
Usually not. A reset is a last resort if you installed something you cannot remove, or if the phone behaves strangely after the click. Try the steps here first, and back up your data before any reset.
