WhatsApp privacy settings: last seen, profile photo and who can add you to groups

Choose who sees your last seen, photo and About, who can add you to groups and who can call you on WhatsApp. Steps to reduce spam and stalking.

By default WhatsApp lets many people see when you were online, your photo and your status, and lets strangers add you to groups. Scammers use these to build trust and spread fake jobs and investment groups. Reset them with a few taps. Menu names differ slightly on Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and OnePlus phones.

Steps

  1. Open Privacy. In WhatsApp tap the three dots, then Settings, then Privacy. On newer versions you reach Settings from the profile picture. You will see a list of who can see what.
  2. Limit Last seen, Profile photo and About. Tap each one and choose My contacts or Nobody. My contacts is a good balance. Doing this stops strangers from seeing your face, daily routine and personal status text.
  3. Control who can add you to groups. Tap Groups and choose My contacts or My contacts except. Fake job, investment and loan groups are often made by adding random numbers. This setting stops them reaching you without an invite.
  4. Silence unknown callers. Look for Calls and Silence unknown callers. Switch it on. Calls from numbers not in your contacts will not ring, which reduces voice and video scam calls.
  5. Check read receipts and the Privacy checkup. Look for Privacy checkup, a guided review, and run it. You can also decide whether to turn Read receipts off. Also check Blocked contacts and block spammers by long-pressing a chat.

Menu names differ a little between phone makers and Android versions. If you cannot find a setting, open Settings and use the search box.

Why it matters

Scammers use your photo and name to build fake profiles, and use group invites to push fake investment, job and trading tips. Strangers who see when you are online can profile you. Choosing My contacts for most settings is a quick way to make your account a harder target for fake profiles, spam groups and the scammers behind them.

Watch out for

How Safeavio helps

Safeavio's Scam check lets you paste or share a WhatsApp message and get a plain verdict with reasons such as urgency or money demands. Link check helps with links in groups. It does not read your chats on its own or change WhatsApp settings, so you still make each privacy choice yourself in the app, one setting at a time.

Check it before you tap or pay

Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions

Should I report a spam group?

Yes. Open the group, tap its name, then Report and leave. You can also report the number on the Sanchar Saathi portal through the Chakshu facility.

Does hiding my profile photo make me less safe?

No. It makes you safer by stopping strangers from copying your photo for fake profiles. People in your contacts can still see it when you choose My contacts.
