How to turn off Install unknown apps for each app on Android

Stop browsers, chat apps and file managers from installing APK files on your Android phone by switching off Install unknown apps one by one.

On modern Android, the permission to install apps from outside Google Play is given app by app. If your browser or WhatsApp has it, a tricked tap on an APK file can install malware. Review the list and keep it off. Menu names differ slightly on Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and OnePlus phones.

Steps

  1. Search for the setting. Open Settings and use the search bar to look for Install unknown apps. On many phones it also appears as Unknown sources or Special app access. Choose the result that shows a list of apps.
  2. Read the full app list. The list shows every app that could ask to install packages, with Allowed or Not allowed under each name. Browsers, chat apps, file managers and email apps are the usual ones.
  3. Open an app that says Allowed. Tap it. You will see a toggle such as Allow from this source. Switch it off. Do this for Chrome, WhatsApp, Telegram, your file manager and any other app you do not use for installing.
  4. Keep one source if you truly need it. If you install apps from a trusted maker website, allow only the single app you use, and switch it off again after the install. Never leave it on for chat apps.
  5. Check again after updates. Some phones reset or add entries after updates or after you install new apps. Open the same list once a month and confirm everything is still Not allowed.

Menu names differ a little between phone makers and Android versions. If you cannot find a setting, open Settings and use the search box.

Why it matters

Fake bank apps, fake RTO or challan apps and fake KYC apps are usually shared as APK files on WhatsApp or SMS. They only install when this permission is on for the app that opened the file. Leaving it off per app is a simple wall between a bad link and your phone.

Watch out for

How Safeavio helps

Safeavio's phone scan checks risky settings such as unknown sources, and reviews apps that came from outside a store. The link check helps you look at a download link before you open it. It warns you, but the permission itself must be switched off by you in Settings.

Check it before you tap or pay

Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions

Will turning this off stop my normal app updates?

No. Play Store updates use a separate path and do not depend on this permission. Only apps installed from files outside the store are affected.

Why is my browser listed as Allowed?

Some phones allow it by default or you may have allowed it once for a download. Switch it off and enable it only if you knowingly need to install a trusted file.
