How to lock a lost Android phone and show a message on the screen
Lock a lost Android phone from another device and show a contact message on the lock screen, plus when to erase it for good.
If your phone is lost but you believe someone honest may find it, you can lock it from far away and leave a message. If you think it is stolen, you may prefer to protect your data and erase it. This guide shows how to lock, how to write a safe message, and how to decide when to erase.
Steps
- Open Find Hub from another device. Use a computer or a friend's phone to open Google Find Hub and sign in with your Google account. Select your lost phone from the list. Menu names differ slightly on Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and OnePlus phones.
- Play sound first. If you lost it at home or in the office, use Play sound. The phone rings loudly for a short time even if it was on silent. This avoids locking a phone that is behind a sofa.
- Secure the phone. Choose the Secure or Lock option. This signs the phone out of your Google account on the screen lock and shows the lock screen. If the phone had no lock, you may be asked to set one.
- Write a safe lock-screen message. Add a short message such as: This phone is lost. Please call my friend. Use a number that is not your own lost phone, and never write your address, bank or ID details.
- Decide whether to erase. Erase removes your data and cannot be undone. After erasing, you can no longer locate the phone. Use it only if the phone is almost certainly gone and you have a backup.
- Tell your SIM company and bank. A locked screen does not stop the SIM. Ask your mobile company to block the SIM, and ask your bank to protect UPI and cards. Use only numbers printed on your card, bill or in the official app.
Menu names differ a little between phone makers and Android versions. If you cannot find a setting, open Settings and use the search box.
Why it matters
A lock stops a casual finder from reading your messages or opening payment apps, and the message gives an honest person a way to return the phone. Erasing is the last step, for the cases where recovery looks hopeless and your privacy matters more than the phone itself. Decide calmly and in that order.
Watch out for
- Do not put your own number on the message if the SIM can be removed.
- Never write your home address or ID numbers on the screen.
- Beware of someone who contacts you asking for money to return the phone.
- Erase only after trying to locate and lock.
How Safeavio helps
Safeavio's lost-mode message and remote lock work from the owner's portal at safeavio.com when the phone is online and the app was set up beforehand. They give you a second route besides Google. They cannot reach a phone that is switched off or has no internet.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions
Can I get my data back after I erase the phone?
Only from a backup you made earlier, such as a Google backup or your own copy of photos and files. Erasing deletes what is on the phone. That is why a regular backup is worth setting up before any loss.
Should I put my phone number on the lock screen?
Use a number that is not on the lost phone, such as a family member's or an office line, because the SIM may be removed. Keep the message short and never include sensitive personal details.
