How to secure your UPI apps and bank accounts after losing your phone
Steps to protect UPI, bank apps and wallets after a phone is lost or stolen, using your bank's official channels only.
UPI apps are protected by your SIM, your phone lock and your UPI PIN. A thief would need to beat all three, but you should still act quickly. This guide covers how to cut off access to UPI, bank apps and wallets after a loss, without calling any number you found on a search page.
Steps
- Block the SIM first. UPI is linked to your mobile number. Ask your mobile company to block the SIM using its official app, bill or website typed by hand. Without the SIM, new UPI set-ups become much harder for a thief.
- Contact each bank. Use the number printed on your debit card, credit card or passbook, or the official bank app on another device. Ask to disable UPI, mobile banking and cards on the lost phone. Ask for a complaint number.
- Use the bank's official channels only. Do not search for a helpline online, because fake numbers are common. Do not share your UPI PIN or card PIN with anyone, even bank staff. You never need a PIN to receive money.
- Remove the phone from your accounts. On a computer, sign in to your Google account and wallets, and remove the lost phone as a signed-in device. Menu names differ slightly on Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and OnePlus phones.
- Change passwords from a safe device. Change your Google, email, shopping and wallet passwords on a computer or a trusted phone. Pick strong, different passwords and avoid reusing the old ones.
- Watch for any unknown payment. Check your bank messages and statements for the next few days. If you see a payment you did not make, call 1930 quickly and report it at cybercrime.gov.in.
Menu names differ a little between phone makers and Android versions. If you cannot find a setting, open Settings and use the search box.
Why it matters
Most stolen-phone fraud depends on speed. A thief may try to reset a UPI PIN, read an OTP or trick your contacts into sending money. Telling the bank early gives it a chance to block access and note when the loss was reported, which helps if a dispute follows. A short delay can be costly, so do not wait until the next morning.
Watch out for
- Never share your UPI PIN, card PIN, CVV or OTP with a caller who says they are from the bank.
- Do not approve any collect request you did not start.
- Scammers watch for lost-phone posts and offer fake help.
- Do not search for bank helplines in a search engine.
How Safeavio helps
Safeavio's Money Shield gives you a checklist to run through before you pay, and its scam check can read a suspicious message you paste in. Safeavio cannot recover money, and it cannot freeze your bank account or block your UPI for you. Your bank and the 1930 helpline do that.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions
Can a thief use my UPI if my phone has a lock?
It becomes much harder, since they need to open the phone, the app and know your UPI PIN. Still, a weak lock or a shared PIN can be guessed, so block the SIM and tell your bank as soon as possible.
Should I close my bank account?
Usually not. Asking the bank to disable UPI and block cards on the lost phone is normally enough. Your bank can tell you what is right for your case, using its official channels.
