How to set up the emergency SOS shortcut on Android

Set up an Android emergency SOS shortcut so a quick press of a button can call for help and alert your emergency contacts.

Emergency SOS lets you call for help and tell your contacts without unlocking the phone or opening an app. On many phones, you trigger it with a quick set of button presses. Not every phone has the same feature or shortcut, so check yours, set it up now and practise once.

Steps

  1. Find the SOS setting. Open Settings and search for Emergency SOS or SOS. It may be under Safety and emergency. Menu names differ slightly on Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and OnePlus phones, and some may not offer it.
  2. Check the shortcut. Look at how it is started. On many phones it is pressing the power button several times quickly, often five. Read the screen on your phone, because the exact gesture differs.
  3. Add emergency contacts. Add the people who should be alerted, and make sure their numbers are right. Tell them they are on your list so they know to respond.
  4. Choose what happens. Some phones can call the emergency number, send your location and a message to your contacts, and record a short clip. Turn on only the options you understand and want.
  5. Turn off the countdown sound if needed. A loud alarm can scare off a threat but may also make a hidden call impossible. Choose the option that suits where you are most at risk, and read what each switch does.
  6. Practise once with care. Test the shortcut using the practice or test mode if your phone has one, so you do not call the emergency services by mistake. If you set it off, stay on the line and say it was an accident.

Menu names differ a little between phone makers and Android versions. If you cannot find a setting, open Settings and use the search box.

Why it matters

In a real emergency, you may have a few seconds and a shaking hand. A button shortcut works when you cannot unlock the phone or find a number. Setting it up and practising once means your body remembers it, and your family knows to expect a message and a location when it counts.

How Safeavio helps

Safeavio's Family features include SOS, family location with safe places and a private family chat, so your family can see an alert from you. It is opt-in, and a parent sets up the family. It cannot reach people if the phone has no network, and it does not replace calling 112 in a real emergency.

Check it before you tap or pay

Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions

Will SOS call the police automatically?

It depends on the phone and your settings. Many versions can call the national emergency number 112 and message your contacts. Read the options on your phone so you know exactly what it will do.

My phone has no SOS setting. What now?

Some phones do not offer it. You can still dial 112 from the lock screen using the Emergency call button. Save a family member as a favourite contact for quick dialling and teach children how to call.
