How to keep a lower UPI limit so one mistake costs less
Learn how to check and lower your UPI payment limit with your bank or UPI app, so a lost phone or a trick cannot empty your account.
UPI has daily limits set by your bank and the app. A lower limit means a thief or a scammer can take less in one day. Many people never look at theirs. This guide shows how to find your limit, ask for a lower one, and keep a second account for small daily use.
Steps
- Open your UPI app's settings. In your UPI app, open the profile or settings area and look for UPI limit, payment limit or bank account details. Names differ by app, and not every app lets you change the limit.
- Check your bank's limit. Your bank sets its own daily limit for UPI. Look in your bank's official app, or call the number on your card or passbook. Ask the daily limit and whether you can lower it.
- Ask for a lower limit. If your normal spending is small, ask the bank for a lower UPI limit. Many banks let you change it in their app under UPI or limits. Menu names differ slightly across banks and phones.
- Use a small account for daily payments. Link a second bank account that holds only a little money, and use it for daily UPI. Keep your savings in an account that is not linked to UPI on this phone.
- Raise it only when you need to. If you plan a large payment, raise the limit for that day and lower it again afterwards. This small habit costs a minute and protects you the rest of the year.
- Turn on bank alerts. Make sure SMS or app alerts are on for every payment. A quick alert helps you spot an unfamiliar debit and report it to 1930 at once.
Menu names differ a little between phone makers and Android versions. If you cannot find a setting, open Settings and use the search box.
Why it matters
A lower limit does not stop fraud, but it caps the damage. If you are tricked into approving a payment, or a thief opens your payment app, the loss stays small. Many people use only a few hundred rupees a day, so a high limit gives them nothing but risk.
Watch out for
- Limits differ by bank and can change, so check yours.
- A lower limit does not protect you if you share your PIN.
- Never raise a limit because a caller asks you to.
- Do not link accounts you never use.
How Safeavio helps
Safeavio's Money Shield offers a Verify before you pay checklist and trusted contacts, which add a pause before you send money. It does not set your bank's limit, because only your bank or UPI app can do that, and it does not watch your payments. Use it as an extra pause, not as a limit.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions
What is the UPI limit in India?
It differs by bank, app and type of payment, and the rules can change. The safest answer is to check your bank's official app or ask the bank using the number on your card or passbook.
Will a lower limit annoy me?
Only on days you pay more than usual. You can usually raise it for a day, then lower it again. For most people the extra safety is worth the small effort of changing it now and then.
