How to block your SIM card after a phone is lost or stolen
How to block a lost SIM in India, get a duplicate, and why blocking it quickly protects your UPI and OTP messages.
Your SIM card is the key to your OTP messages. If a thief keeps your SIM active, they can try to reset passwords or approve payments. Blocking the SIM stops that. You then collect a duplicate SIM with the same number. This guide explains how to do it safely without falling for fake helpline numbers.
Steps
- Use another phone or a computer. Borrow a trusted person's phone or use a computer. You do not need your lost phone for this. Keep your ID proof ready because the company will ask you to prove it is really your number.
- Find the official contact. Open the official app or website of your mobile company by typing the address yourself, or look at an old bill. Do not use a number from a search result or a social media post, because scammers plant fake helpline numbers.
- Ask for block and a duplicate SIM. Tell them your SIM was lost or stolen, and ask them to block it and issue a duplicate SIM on the same number. Ask for a reference or complaint number and write it down.
- Visit a store with ID. Go to an official store with your ID proof to collect the new SIM. They may ask for a copy of the police complaint. Stores differ, so ask what to carry when you call.
- Wait for activation and do not rush. A new SIM may take a few hours to start working. Do not hand your SIM or an OTP to any agent who comes to you. Only deal with the official store or the company's own app.
- Then fix your accounts. After the new SIM works, check that your bank, UPI and WhatsApp accounts still belong to you. Menu names differ slightly on Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and OnePlus phones, but the account checks are the same.
Menu names differ a little between phone makers and Android versions. If you cannot find a setting, open Settings and use the search box.
Why it matters
Many fraud attempts after a theft depend on getting your OTP. If the SIM stays active, the OTP lands on the thief's phone. A blocked SIM also stops calls made at your cost. A duplicate SIM brings your old number back to you so that your bank and friends can still reach you.
Watch out for
- Never share your SIM number or an OTP with someone who phones you saying they are from the company.
- Do not install a remote-control app on someone's request.
- Be careful with a sudden loss of signal on a phone you still hold, because it can mean a SIM swap.
- Keep the complaint number safe.
How Safeavio helps
Safeavio can send a SIM-change alert if the SIM in your phone changes, which helps you notice that something is wrong. It cannot block a SIM itself because only your mobile company can do that. It also cannot stop a thief who removes the SIM and switches the phone off.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions
Will I lose my phone number if I block the SIM?
No. A block is usually followed by a duplicate SIM on the same number, which you collect with your ID. Ask your mobile company about the steps, as they can differ by company and area.
Is blocking the SIM enough to protect my UPI?
It is one important step but not the only one. Also contact your bank using the number on your card or passbook, and change passwords from another device so the thief cannot use your saved logins.
