Fake Google Pay calls and apps
Reward-winner calls, QR code refunds and fake helpers posing as Google Pay support, and how to confirm inside the actual app.
Google's UPI payments app, where people pay contacts and shops, scan QR codes, check bank balances, recharge phones and earn small reward scratch cards. Because many people use it, scammers pretend to be Google Pay on phone calls, in apps and on WhatsApp. This page lists the lies they usually tell and how to check before you act.
Lines used in fake Google Pay calls and apps
- A caller says you won a Google Pay reward and asks you to scan a QR code to receive it
- A person asks you to open a payment request and tap Pay to cancel a duplicate charge
- A helper on a call tells you to enable accessibility access for a Google Pay support app
- A caller poses as an e-commerce seller and sends a QR code to receive your refund
How to verify it yourself
Rewards in the Google Pay app appear as scratch cards inside the app itself and never need a QR scan or a PIN to receive. If a person says a payment went wrong, check the transaction history in the app and your own bank's statement. Only pay when you have read the name and the amount on the confirmation screen. Help is available through the Help and feedback option in the app. A QR code is always for paying out, not for refunds to you.
Quick checklist
- Do not tap links or call numbers inside the message.
- Open the official app, or type the official website yourself, and look for the same notice.
- Never share an OTP, PIN, CVV or password with anyone, including "staff".
- If money moved, call 1930 and your bank at once.
How Safeavio helps
Safeavio Sentinel's phone scan lists apps outside a store, risky permissions and settings such as unknown sources, and the Money Shield checklist slows you down before you send money. It cannot stop a call, but it helps you spot a fake app afterwards.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions
A caller says they are from Google Pay. Is it real?
Treat it as unverified. Hang up and contact Google Pay through its official app or the number printed on your card, bill or official website. Never install an app or share an OTP because a caller asked.
Can Google Pay ask me to install an app on a call?
Be very careful. Scammers use screen-sharing and fake apps to watch your screen and read OTPs. Install apps only from the official store listing that you find yourself, never from a link or a caller.
