Fake Google Pay messages and links
Texts using the Google Pay name promise scratch cards, flag restrictions and push refund requests. See the traps and how to verify.
Google's UPI payments app, where people pay contacts and shops, scan QR codes, check bank balances, recharge phones and earn small reward scratch cards. Because many people use it, scammers pretend to be Google Pay in SMS, WhatsApp and email messages. This page lists the lies they usually tell and how to check before you act.
Lines used in fake Google Pay messages
- Google Pay scratch card worth Rs 1,000 unlocked, scratch it through this link
- Google Pay account will be restricted for unusual activity, verify card here
- Google Pay merchant verification needed for your shop QR, send a selfie and PAN
- Google Pay reversed a wrong payment, accept the refund request within 10 minutes
How to verify it yourself
Rewards in the Google Pay app appear as scratch cards inside the app itself and never need a QR scan or a PIN to receive. If a person says a payment went wrong, check the transaction history in the app and your own bank's statement. Only pay when you have read the name and the amount on the confirmation screen. Help is available through the Help and feedback option in the app. A QR code is always for paying out, not for refunds to you.
Quick checklist
- Do not tap links or call numbers inside the message.
- Open the official app, or type the official website yourself, and look for the same notice.
- Never share an OTP, PIN, CVV or password with anyone, including "staff".
- If money moved, call 1930 and your bank at once.

Questions
How can I tell if a Google Pay message is real?
Do not judge by the sender name or the logo; both can be copied. Open the official Google Pay app or type its website yourself and look for the same notice. Google Pay will not ask for your OTP, PIN or password in a message.
What should I do if I tapped a link in a fake Google Pay message?
Close the page without typing anything. If you entered details, change the password at once from the official app, call your bank or provider using the number on your card or bill, and report at cybercrime.gov.in. If money moved, call 1930.
