Fake WhatsApp Payments messages and links
Chats using WhatsApp Payments claim verification forwards, cashback and mistaken transfers. See how the lines work and how to check.
The UPI-based feature inside WhatsApp that lets users send and receive money from their contacts and scan QR codes after linking a bank account. Because many people use it, scammers pretend to be WhatsApp Payments in SMS, WhatsApp and email messages. This page lists the lies they usually tell and how to check before you act.
Lines used in fake WhatsApp Payments messages
- WhatsApp Payments verification needed, forward this message to ten contacts to keep sending money
- WhatsApp Payments cashback on your next transfer, approve the request below
- WhatsApp Payments account under review, tap to link your bank again
- WhatsApp Payments a friend sent you money by mistake, return it to this number
How to verify it yourself
Payments inside WhatsApp are made with your UPI PIN, which only appears when you are sending money, so a screen that asks for it to receive is a trap. If a known contact suddenly asks for money, call them on their normal number and use your own judgement. WhatsApp does not need you to forward a message to unlock payments. Check the transaction in the chat's payment details and in your bank's app. Report a hijacked account through WhatsApp settings and fraud on 1930.
Quick checklist
- Do not tap links or call numbers inside the message.
- Open the official app, or type the official website yourself, and look for the same notice.
- Never share an OTP, PIN, CVV or password with anyone, including "staff".
- If money moved, call 1930 and your bank at once.
