Fake WhatsApp Payments calls and apps
Fake payment requests, hijacked contacts and QR prizes on WhatsApp, and how to confirm before entering your UPI PIN in chat.
The UPI-based feature inside WhatsApp that lets users send and receive money from their contacts and scan QR codes after linking a bank account. Because many people use it, scammers pretend to be WhatsApp Payments on phone calls, in apps and on WhatsApp. This page lists the lies they usually tell and how to check before you act.
Lines used in fake WhatsApp Payments calls and apps
- A stranger sends a payment request in a chat and says to tap Pay to receive a refund
- A person hacks a contact's account and asks you for urgent money through WhatsApp Payments
- A voice says WhatsApp will charge a fee for payments and asks you to avoid it by sharing a code
- A caller asks you to scan a QR code shared on chat to get a lottery prize
How to verify it yourself
Payments inside WhatsApp are made with your UPI PIN, which only appears when you are sending money, so a screen that asks for it to receive is a trap. If a known contact suddenly asks for money, call them on their normal number and use your own judgement. WhatsApp does not need you to forward a message to unlock payments. Check the transaction in the chat's payment details and in your bank's app. Report a hijacked account through WhatsApp settings and fraud on 1930.
Quick checklist
- Do not tap links or call numbers inside the message.
- Open the official app, or type the official website yourself, and look for the same notice.
- Never share an OTP, PIN, CVV or password with anyone, including "staff".
- If money moved, call 1930 and your bank at once.
How Safeavio helps

Questions
A caller says they are from WhatsApp Payments. Is it real?
Treat it as unverified. Hang up and contact WhatsApp Payments through its official app or the number printed on your card, bill or official website. Never install an app or share an OTP because a caller asked.
Can WhatsApp Payments ask me to install an app on a call?
Be very careful. Scammers use screen-sharing and fake apps to watch your screen and read OTPs. Install apps only from the official store listing that you find yourself, never from a link or a caller.
