Bank Nominee Update Scam
A message or call says nominee details are missing and your account will be frozen. The form or OTP they ask for opens your account to the scammer.
Banks and investment platforms really do ask account holders to add a nominee, so a message that says your nominee is missing sounds routine. The scam adds a threat that the account will be frozen and a link to fix it right away. The form collects your login, ID details and an OTP. Nominee details can be added at the branch or inside the official app.
How the scam works
The scammer sends a message in the name of a bank or a savings platform, saying that adding a nominee is now mandatory and the deadline is close. The wording is plain and calm, and it includes a link and a line that your account may be restricted. Because it is a real topic in the news, people do not question it much.
The link opens a form that asks for your name, account number, nominee name, your ID number and then your login. The last step is an OTP, which the page says confirms the nominee. If a caller helps you, they ask you to share the OTP or to install an app to 'upload your nominee documents' to their system.
The scammer uses your login and OTP to access the account, and may change your contact details so that alerts stop. The nominee data and ID number are used for further fraud. A person who has little time to check, such as a busy professional or a senior citizen, may only see the loss when money is missing or when a transaction fails.
An example of what you may see
Example only: 'Dear account holder, nominee details are not updated on your account. As per new rules your account will be frozen in 48 hours. Update your nominee now using this link and verify with the OTP sent to your mobile. Failure to update may result in restrictions on withdrawals and cards.' The link is not on the bank's own website and the form asks for your net banking password.
This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

Questions people ask
Is a nominee really needed on bank accounts?
Nominee details are useful and banks encourage them. But you can add them at the branch or in the official app, and an account is not frozen overnight because of a text message. Check with your bank.
Why does a nominee form need an OTP?
A scam form asks for one because it needs your OTP to log in or approve something. Do not enter an OTP on a page that you reached from a message, even if it looks like your bank's.
How do I add a nominee safely?
Use the bank's official app after logging in yourself, or visit the branch with your ID. Do not use links, callers or messages that ask you to do it. Keep a copy of the confirmation you receive.
