TRAI SIM Block in 24 Hours Call Scam

A call claims to be the telecom regulator and says your SIM will be blocked in two hours for illegal use, then hands you to a fake police officer.

The call opens with a recorded voice or a polite agent who says they are from the telecom regulator. Your number, they say, has been used for illegal activity and will be disconnected within hours. You are offered a way out: press a key or talk to an officer. That officer then turns the call into a police or investigation story. The regulator does not make such calls, and the whole drama exists to get you to pay or to share your documents.

How the scam works

The scammer dials random numbers using automated systems. The recorded message mentions complaints, a count of illegal messages or abusive calls, and a deadline. Pressing a key connects you to a live person who gives an official sounding name and a badge number. They quote your phone number back to you, which feels like proof they have your records.

Next they pass you to a 'senior officer' on a video or chat app who claims that a case has been registered in your name. They may ask you to confirm Aadhaar, bank accounts and where you live. To avoid arrest or SIM blocking, they say you must cooperate and transfer your balance to a secure account for checking. They insist you stay on the line while you do it.

The payoff is a bank transfer or your documents. The scammer may have you move money, take a loan or buy gift cards, always with the promise of a refund after the check. Some victims also give Aadhaar copies that are later used for new SIMs or loans. When the money arrives, the calls stop and the numbers no longer ring.

An example of what you may see

Example call (invented): 'This is the telecom authority. Your mobile number has been reported for sending illegal messages. Your SIM will be blocked in two hours. Press 1 to speak to an officer. We will transfer you to the cyber crime branch. Keep your Aadhaar and bank details ready, and do not cut the call or tell anyone.' The recorded start, the threat, the transfer to a so-called cyber branch and the request for documents are all warning signs.

This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

Red flags

What to do right now

  1. Hang up. A regulator does not call to threaten your SIM.
  2. Do not press any key and do not give any detail.
  3. Contact your mobile operator through its official app or the number on your bill if you are worried.
  4. Tell a family member about the call.
  5. Report the number on Sanchar Saathi and at cybercrime.gov.in.

If you already paid or shared a code

  1. Call 1930 at once and give the transfer details.
  2. Tell your bank through the number on your card to try to hold the funds.
  3. File a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in with the number, time and any documents you sent.
  4. Watch for new SIMs or loans in your name and report them to the provider.

National Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930. Report online at cybercrime.gov.in. Do it fast: the sooner your bank is told, the better the chance that money can be held.

How Safeavio helps

Safeavio Sentinel's scam check reads a message or notes you paste and points out fake authority, a short deadline and a demand to move money. The Money Shield checklist helps you pause and verify before paying, and a family code word helps confirm that a real relative is on the line. Safeavio does not block calls by itself and cannot tell whether a caller is real, so hang up and check through official channels.

Check it before you tap or pay

Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions people ask

Can my SIM be blocked because of a call like this?

Telecom operators handle disconnections through their own official processes, with notices you can verify on their app or by the number on your bill. A call from an unknown person threatening a block in hours is a scam pattern.

Why do they pass me to a police officer?

Adding a second, more serious character increases fear and makes the story feel official. The switch also stops you from questioning the first caller. Real police do not handle cases this way over a phone or video call.

What can I do about the number that called me?

Report it on the Sanchar Saathi portal through the Chakshu facility and on cybercrime.gov.in. Keep the call time and number. Do not call it back, because it may be set to charge or to collect more details.
