5G SIM Upgrade Link Scam

A message offers a free 5G SIM or network upgrade through a link or app. It installs spyware or steals your OTP and bank details.

New technology gets scammers excited too. Messages claim you are eligible for a free upgrade to 5G and that you must tap a link, install an app or share a code to activate it. Many people do want a faster connection and feel they might miss out. The upgrade is invented. What you actually give away is an app with powerful permissions, your OTP or your approval for a duplicate SIM.

How the scam works

The text or call names a well-known operator and mentions a special offer. It says the service is free for existing customers but needs a quick update, as customers on older SIMs will lose service. The tone is friendly and not threatening, which is unusual for scams and lowers your guard. It says it will take only a minute.

Three routes are used. One is a link that opens a page asking for your number and an OTP. A second is an APK file or app to 'activate 5G' that asks for permissions to read messages and notifications. The third is a call where the person guides you to reply to an SMS to confirm a new SIM, which can approve a duplicate SIM in your name.

The payoff depends on the route. An OTP can reset an account password. An installed app can forward every OTP and message to the scammer, or let them control the phone. A duplicate SIM can take over your number entirely. Your phone may also be added to a network of devices used to send more scam texts, without any visible sign.

An example of what you may see

Example message (invented): 'Congratulations! You are selected for a FREE 5G upgrade. Your old SIM will stop working soon. Download the 5G Activation app now or click here to confirm. Offer for existing customers only.' The app, once installed, asks for permission to read your SMS and show over other apps. Operators explain upgrade steps inside their official app or in stores, not through random app files in chat. Nothing here is a real notice, and you can safely ignore it.

This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

Red flags

What to do right now

  1. Do not install any file or tap the link.
  2. Check offers in your operator's official app, installed from the store.
  3. If you want a new SIM, visit the operator's store with your documents.
  4. Do not reply to a message from a caller that asks you to confirm.
  5. Report the message on Sanchar Saathi.

If you already paid or shared a code

  1. If you installed an app, uninstall it, restart the phone and review permissions.
  2. Call 1930 at once if any money has been taken.
  3. Change passwords for email and banking from a clean device.
  4. File a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in and tell your bank through the number on your card.

National Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930. Report online at cybercrime.gov.in. Do it fast: the sooner your bank is told, the better the chance that money can be held.

How Safeavio helps

Safeavio Sentinel's phone scan reviews installed apps, permissions and apps from outside a store, so an upgrade app that reads your SMS can show up as unusual. The link check helps you see lookalike addresses before you open them, and the scam check reads a pasted message. It does not remove malware by magic: it tells you what looks wrong and how to fix it. It cannot confirm whether a real upgrade exists.

Check it before you tap or pay

Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions people ask

Do I need a new SIM to use 5G?

That depends on your operator and device, and the operator explains it in its official app or stores. You do not need a stranger's link or app. If a message says your SIM will stop working, check with the operator's official channel.

Why is a friendly message still dangerous?

Scams do not always threaten. Offers of something free lower your guard. The danger lies in what you are asked to do: install an app, share a code or approve a SIM change. A short pause costs nothing and can save a lot.

How do I know an app is safe to install?

Install only from the official store, check who published it and read the permissions it asks for. An upgrade app asking to read your SMS is a warning. If unsure, skip it and ask the operator's store.
