How it looks through an app, the red flags and what to do.

A fake app can be installed from a link, from a file sent on chat or even from a lookalike listing. Once on your phone it can ask for powerful permissions. TRAI SIM Block in 24 Hours Call Scam is one of the ways this shows up: A call claims to be the telecom regulator and says your SIM will be blocked in two hours for illegal use, then hands you to a fake police officer.

What trai sim block in 24 hours call scam looks like through an app

• A screen-sharing or remote-control app that a caller asks you to install.
• A loan app that asks for contacts and photos.
• A "KYC", "challan" or "bank rewards" app from a link.

The scammer dials random numbers using automated systems. The recorded message mentions complaints, a count of illegal messages or abusive calls, and a deadline. Pressing a key connects you to a live person who gives an official sounding name and a badge number. They quote your phone number back to you, which feels like proof they have your records.

Red flags to check on the app

• A recorded voice says your SIM will be blocked soon.
• The caller names a regulator and a deadline in hours.
• You are passed to a police or cyber officer on chat.
• They ask for Aadhaar and bank details on the call.
• You were told to install it by a stranger or a caller.
• It has few or odd reviews, or a name with spelling changes.

What to do

1. Hang up. A regulator does not call to threaten your SIM.
2. Do not press any key and do not give any detail.
3. Contact your mobile operator through its official app or the number on your bill if you are worried.
4. Do not install it. If it is installed, uninstall it now (Settings, Apps).
5. Open Settings and check Accessibility, Device admin apps and Install unknown apps for anything you do not recognise.
6. Change the passwords of your bank and email from a clean device if the app had access.

Report the fake app to the store it came from and, if money moved, call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in.

If money or a code is already gone

1. Call 1930 at once and give the transfer details.
2. Tell your bank through the number on your card to try to hold the funds.
3. File a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in with the number, time and any documents you sent.
4. Watch for new SIMs or loans in your name and report them to the provider.
