Screen Share Support Trick Posing as a Utility or Telecom Helpdesk

A fake telecom or utility helpdesk asks you to open a screen-sharing app to 'fix' your SIM or bill, then watches you use banking apps.

A text says your SIM will be switched off today because of incomplete verification, or that your electricity connection will be cut tonight for an unpaid bill. A number to call is provided. The person who answers offers to fix everything by remote support, if you install a free tool. Many people agree because the threat is immediate and the caller sounds like a patient technician. They are in reality a scammer waiting to watch your banking app.

How the scam works

The scammer sends a text with an alarming deadline and a contact number. The wording copies a common utility or mobile notice and sometimes uses the customer's name. People who call because they are afraid of losing service reach a helpful voice that asks for a few details, then moves to a 'quick fix' that needs a remote-support application from the app store.

Once the tool is open, the caller asks you to read out the code so that he can 'update your KYC' or 'clear your bill' from his side. He then asks you to pay a tiny amount, for example Rs 10, to confirm the connection. When you open your UPI app, he sees the screen and the PIN as you type it, or he tells you to hold the phone and look away while he completes the step.

The payoff is the money in your account and possibly your OTPs. With control of the screen, the scammer can read messages, tap through bank screens and send transfers. In some cases he also changes the settings of your SIM or email, so recovery becomes harder. Victims often notice only when the balance falls, long after the call is over.

An example of what you may see

Example SMS and call (invented): 'Dear customer, your electricity connection will be disconnected tonight at 9.30 pm due to last month's bill not updated. Call the officer immediately.' On the call: 'Sir, we can update it from here. Please install the helpdesk tool, tell me the code, and pay Rs 10 to confirm your account. Keep the screen on and do not close the app.' The caller says it will take only two minutes.

This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

Red flags

What to do right now

  1. Do not call the number in the text; check your real bill in the utility's official app or website.
  2. Never install a remote-support tool because a stranger asked.
  3. If an app is already installed, close and uninstall it, then switch to airplane mode.
  4. Use the number printed on your bill or SIM documents to confirm anything.
  5. Report the sender in Sanchar Saathi under Chakshu.

If you already paid or shared a code

  1. Call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in immediately.
  2. Call your bank on the number printed on your card and ask them to protect your account.
  3. Change your UPI PIN, banking passwords and email password from another safe device.
  4. Check whether your SIM or email settings were changed and tell your operator through its official app.

National Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930. Report online at cybercrime.gov.in. Do it fast: the sooner your bank is told, the better the chance that money can be held.

Safeavio cannot tell whether a bill is genuinely due and cannot block a phone call.

Check it before you tap or pay

Questions people ask

Can a utility really cut my service tonight by SMS?

Genuine notices come with your name, account details and are verifiable in the company's own app or on the bill. A message that rushes you to call a stranger and install a tool is a known trick.

How can I check my bill safely?

Open the utility's official app, or type its website by hand, and log in with your own account. You can also use the contact number printed on your last paper or email bill. The bill amount and due date will be shown there.

What does a Rs 10 payment prove?

Nothing useful. It makes you open a payment app while the scammer watches, so he sees your PIN or guides you to approve something larger. Real helpdesks do not need it, and a sudden payment request is the clue.
