Fake Windows Security Alert and Locked Browser Page
A full-screen 'Windows security alert' locks your browser and shows a helpline. The page is fake and the agent aims to take control of your PC.
Your computer browser suddenly shows a blue or red page with a siren sound. It says 'Windows security alert: your computer is blocked' and shows a phone number. The tab will not close easily, and the message says calling is the only way to avoid data loss. It looks serious, but it is only a web page. Real operating systems never lock your screen and ask you to phone a number.
How the scam works
The set-up is an ad or redirect that opens a page in full-screen mode. The page plays an audio warning, shows fake error codes and uses logos that copy a known software company. It may add a fake 'account locked' text and a timer. Because the browser appears frozen, many people cannot see how to close it and panic. Others try to restart, only to find it returns when the browser reopens the last tab.
The pressure comes from fear of losing files, passwords or bank access. A calm agent answers the call and says that criminals are using your computer right now. He asks you to type a short web address to start a remote session. During the session he opens command windows that appear to show suspicious connections, which in reality are normal system outputs, and tells you that only paid 'repair' can fix them.
The payoff is a payment for a pointless service plan, access to your files and saved passwords, and sometimes your bank accounts. The agent may ask you to log in to net banking to 'confirm that it is safe'. After payment he sets a lock screen or a fake password that he claims to remove only when you pay again.
An example of what you may see
Example page and call (invented): 'WINDOWS SECURITY ALERT. Your computer has been blocked due to suspicious activity. Do not shut down. Call the support line immediately.' The agent says, 'Madam, hackers have your bank details. Open the tool I tell you, and I will show you their activity. A security licence costs Rs 5,500 and will secure everything today.' The agent also tells you to keep the call on speaker.
This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

Questions people ask
Will Windows ever lock my screen and show a phone number?
No. Real security tools do not freeze your browser and ask you to call a number. The page is just a web advertisement or script using full-screen mode. It is only a web page. Treat the page as an advertisement, and do not enter any detail on it.
How do I close a page that will not close?
Use the task manager to end the browser or press and hold the power button, then reopen without restoring the last tabs. Remove any notification permissions the site was given. Do not call the number or press any button on the page.
Is it safe to log in to my bank to check?
Not while someone is connected to your computer. Disconnect first, and only then use your bank's own app or site from a clean device. After that, your bank's helpline will also advise you. Also let your family know the page is harmless once closed, since elderly relatives are often scared by it.
