Airline Refund and Customer Care Search Scam
Searching for an airline refund number can lead to a fake helpline that takes card details or installs a remote app. See how to find the real support.
A flight is cancelled and the traveller searches for 'airline refund customer care number'. The top result or a sponsored ad shows a number that belongs to a scammer. The 'agent' offers a quick refund, asks for card details, an OTP or the installation of a screen-sharing app, and then takes money instead. The scam depends on stress, a real cancellation and the habit of trusting search results.
How the scam works
Scammers publish web pages and ads that copy the look of an airline's support page and list their own number. They target people who have just seen a cancellation or a delay. When the traveller calls, the voice is polite and says the refund can be processed right now, as the 'department' has a special line for such cases.
The agent says verification is required and asks for the booking reference, the card used and then an OTP. If the traveller hesitates, he suggests installing a remote-support app so that he can 'do it for you'. He claims the refund is being credited and asks the traveller to confirm the amount, while actually moving money out of the account.
The payoff is card or bank money and, in remote sessions, anything on the screen. Some callers say the refund came in too high by mistake and ask the traveller to return the difference, which is the victim's own money. The traveller is then left with a cancelled flight, no refund and an empty account.
An example of what you may see
Example call (invented): 'Welcome to flight cancellation refund desk. Your refund of Rs 8,400 is ready. For verification, please install this support app and read out the code on your screen. Then I will ask for the OTP so the amount can be credited to your card right now.' Later he says: 'Sir, we credited Rs 84,000 by mistake, please send back Rs 75,600 immediately.' If you refuse, he becomes stern and says the refund will be cancelled in five minutes.
This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

How Safeavio helps
Safeavio's link check can look at a support page address before you trust it and warn about lookalike domains, and the Phone scan lists apps from outside a store, including screen-sharing tools you may have installed. Money Shield reminds you that refunds never need a PIN. It cannot place a call or confirm refund status, so use the airline's official app.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions people ask
How can I find the real airline support number?
Use the number inside the airline's own app, on your ticket or on its official website typed by hand. Avoid numbers from search results or ads, because scammers pay to appear at the top. If you are unsure, open the ticket email and follow the link or contact printed in it.
Do refunds ever need an OTP or PIN?
No. A refund goes back to the payment source without any action from you. Any request for a PIN, OTP or screen sharing during a refund call means it is a scam. Once an agent asks for any code, the refund story is over.
What if I already installed a remote app?
Uninstall it at once, call your bank on the number on your card, and change passwords from a clean phone. Then report to 1930 and cybercrime.gov.in with the call details. Contact your bank at once, because every minute counts.
