Fake Laptop and Printer Support Helpline
Searching for laptop or printer help brings up a fake service number. The agent charges for useless fixes or takes remote control of your computer.
Your printer shows an error, or your laptop will not start. You search for the brand's support number and call the first result. A helpful 'technician' says the problem needs remote repair, a paid plan or a new licence. He asks you to open a link, share your screen and pay by card. The number was a decoy, the repair is fake, and the real damage is the access he now has to your computer and accounts.
How the scam works
The scammer pays for search ads or posts numbers on listing pages that pretend to be the manufacturer's help. The page looks like the brand's website and offers chat or a call-back form. People under stress, with a work deadline or a child's assignment waiting, rarely check whether the site is official. They call and describe the issue, giving the scammer a clear story to build on.
The pressure is technical jargon. The agent says your computer has been 'hacked', your licence has expired or an error code shows a serious fault. He asks you to open a web address and install a remote tool so that he can 'clean' the machine. A fake scan screen displays alarming results, then a price is quoted for a yearly 'protection plan' or an immediate repair fee.
The payoff is the plan fee, often in the thousands of rupees, and access to files, browser passwords and net banking on your computer. Some agents also open your bank website while connected and ask you to log in to 'show the refund'. After payment, the machine's original problem remains, and calling the number again leads to a new, more expensive offer.
An example of what you may see
Example call (invented): 'Welcome to printer support. Sir, your printer error means your Wi-Fi is hacked. Please open this web address and install the remote tool. I will clean it. The annual protection plan is Rs 3,999, payable by card now, and it covers all your devices. Do not shut down the laptop, or you will lose your files.' He then asks for your card number to confirm the plan.
This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

Questions people ask
How do I find real support for my printer or laptop?
Look at the sticker or warranty card for official details, or type the manufacturer's website by hand and use its support page. Avoid numbers from ads or map listings. Check that the website address is the real one.
Does an error code mean my device is hacked?
Usually not. Error codes often mean a simple issue such as paper, a driver or a network setting. A stranger claiming it is a hack is trying to create fear. They often use jargon to scare you.
What should I do if I already gave remote access?
Disconnect the internet, remove the remote tool, change passwords from another device and watch your bank statements. Report to 1930 if any money moved. A tech-savvy relative or a local shop can then check the computer without pressure.
