UPI Refund Wrong PIN Scam
After an order cancellation or failed payment you are told a refund needs your UPI PIN or a link. That is how the refund money turns into a loss.
You complain about a delayed order, a failed recharge or a returned parcel, and soon someone calls claiming to be from the company's refund team. They promise to return your money through UPI right away. The catch is a link, a form or a PIN entry that they say is needed to start the refund. Real refunds go back to the original payment source without any action on your side.
How the scam works
Scammers watch public complaint posts and search results for customer care numbers. They place their own numbers where you will find them. When you call or post, they reach out first and sound like a helpful refund agent. They already know the product or amount because you told them, so the call feels genuine and the trust builds quickly.
They then say the refund has failed or needs verification. You are sent a payment link or asked to open a collect request, and told to enter your UPI PIN 'to confirm the refund account'. Sometimes they ask you to read out an OTP or screen-share. Any delay is blamed on the system so you keep following steps without pausing to think.
Each PIN entry is a real payment. A request for Rs 4,999 can be followed by a second one for the 'refund tax' or 'difference amount'. The scammer keeps adding small reasons until your balance or daily limit runs out. They end the call only after the money has moved on, leaving you with a bigger loss than the original order.
An example of what you may see
Example only: 'Madam, this is the refund desk. Your cancelled order refund of Rs 1,299 could not be processed. I am sending a link to your WhatsApp. Open it, choose your UPI app and type your PIN so the money can come back to the same account. If you do not do this in ten minutes the refund will expire. Please stay on the line.' The link opens a payment screen, not a refund screen, and the caller never gives you a ticket number you can check.
This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

Questions people ask
Does a genuine refund ever need my UPI PIN?
No. A refund goes back to the account or card you paid from, and nothing is needed from you except waiting. If someone asks for a PIN, OTP or card details to start a refund, it is a payment going out of your account.
How do I find the real customer care of a shopping app?
Open the official app and use its help section, or use the contact details printed on your invoice or the company's own website typed by hand. Numbers from search results, ads or social media posts can be planted by scammers.
The caller knew my order details. Does that mean they are real?
Not necessarily. Details can come from your own public complaint, a data leak or a delivery slip. Knowing facts is not proof. Ask yourself whether they asked for a PIN, OTP or a link. If yes, end the call.
