UPI Refund Wrong PIN Scam by SMS

How it looks by SMS, the red flags and what to do.

On SMS the scammer has only a few lines to work with, so they use a deadline, a threat or a prize and a link that must be tapped "now". UPI Refund Wrong PIN Scam is one of the ways this shows up: After an order cancellation or failed payment you are told a refund needs your UPI PIN or a link. That is how the refund money turns into a loss.

What upi refund wrong pin scam looks like by SMS

• A shortened or oddly spelled link that does not match the real website.
• A request to call a number, install an app or share an OTP.
• Several near-identical messages arriving together from different senders.

Scammers watch public complaint posts and search results for customer care numbers. They place their own numbers where you will find them. When you call or post, they reach out first and sound like a helpful refund agent. They already know the product or amount because you told them, so the call feels genuine and the trust builds quickly.

Red flags to check on the text message

• The caller reached you after you posted a complaint or searched online.
• A refund is said to need your UPI PIN or an OTP.
• You are given a link or QR code to 'receive' the refund.
• A deadline such as ten minutes is attached to the refund.
• It threatens blocking, arrest, disconnection or a fine unless you act at once.
• It promises a refund, prize or cashback you never asked for.

What to do

1. Hang up and do not open the link you were sent.
2. Open the shopping or payment app yourself and check the order status there.
3. Use only the support option inside the official app or the number printed on your bill.
4. Delete the message and tell family members who may get the same text.
5. Do not reply, do not tap the link and do not call the number in the message.
6. Open the official app or type the official website yourself to see if there is any real notice.

You can report suspicious SMS and calls on the Sanchar Saathi portal (Chakshu facility) of the Department of Telecommunications.

If money or a code is already gone

1. Call 1930 immediately and report the amount and transaction IDs.
2. Tell your bank through the number on your card so they can try to hold the funds.
3. File a report on https://cybercrime.gov.in with the call time and chat screenshots.
4. Delete any app they asked you to install and change your UPI PIN.
