Fake UPI App Flash Pay Scam
A shopkeeper or seller is shown a 'payment successful' screen from a copy of a UPI app that only mimics the look. No money is sent.
At a shop counter, a customer holds up a phone and shows a green tick and a payment animation. The shopkeeper glances at it and hands over goods. The screen came from a prank or mock app built to look like a payment app, so nothing was transferred. Shops with busy counters and no speaker for incoming credits are the usual targets.
How the scam works
The scammer installs an app from outside the official store that imitates the screens of well-known payment apps. It lets them type any name, amount and ID and shows a success page with sound and a tick. It is sold in groups and videos as a joke tool but is used to cheat small shops and street vendors.
They choose a crowded moment, a night shift or a small shop where the owner depends on a quick glance. They hold the screen close, press 'pay' quickly, and say the money is sent. They may scan the shop's real QR code first so it looks natural, then show a different page when the app finishes.
The shop owner hands over mobile recharge, jewellery, groceries or cash change. Later the account shows no credit. The scammer leaves with goods and the shopkeeper has no proof except a memory of a screen. The trick works because many people confirm payments by looking at the payer's phone rather than their own. A fake screen costs nothing to the scammer.
An example of what you may see
Example only: At a counter, a customer says: 'Sir, 4,500 payment done, please see. Green tick is there. My UPI is a little slow today, your phone will ping in a minute. Please give the phone quickly, I am getting late for my train.' The shopkeeper sees a tick on a phone that is not their own. The customer never lets you hold the phone, and the money never appears in your own app or on the speaker, though the animation plays smoothly and the tick looks real to a quick glance.
This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.
Red flags
- The payer shows a screen but there is no ping on your own phone.
- The customer is in a rush or asks you to hand over goods first.
- The screen loads with unusual animation or a slightly different logo.
- The payer refuses to let you scan or tap on your own device.
- The amount is high and the customer pays only from a phone screen.
- The payer says the network is slow and your credit will come later.
What to do right now
- Wait for the credit message on your own phone or check your own bank or UPI app.
- Do not hand over goods based on the customer's phone screen.
- Show your own QR and watch the payment arrive on your device.
- Ask for another payment mode if the credit does not appear.
- Install apps only from the official store and avoid unofficial payment look-alikes.
If you already paid or shared a code
- If goods were handed over, note the customer's face, time and any shop camera footage.
- Call 1930 if any money moved on a false promise and give the details.
- Report at https://cybercrime.gov.in with the time and amount.
- Tell your bank if a cash return or transfer was made on a fake credit.

How Safeavio helps
Safeavio's phone scan reviews installed apps and flags apps that look like copies of other apps and apps outside a store, which can help a shop owner or customer notice a suspicious fake payment tool on their own phone. The QR check shows where a code goes. Safeavio cannot judge a screen shown on someone else's phone. Check your own phone first.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions people ask
How can a shopkeeper check a payment quickly?
Look at your own phone or the account entry in your own bank or UPI app, or use a sound box that announces credits to your account. Never accept the payer's phone screen as proof.
Are fake payment apps legal to use?
Using them to cheat a seller is fraud. We do not give legal advice, but you should keep any evidence you have and report it, because the scheme depends on a seller who trusts a screen.
How do I know if an app on my phone is a copy?
Check the developer name in the store listing, how many people use it, and where you installed it from. Apps installed from outside a store, or with similar names to well-known payment apps, deserve extra caution.
