PG and Hostel Booking Advance Scam

A PG or hostel listing with cheap rent asks for a booking advance, then vanishes or shows a different room. See how students and workers are cheated.

Students and new workers moving to a city look for a paying guest room or hostel seat online. A listing with bright photos and low rent asks for a booking advance 'before the seat is taken'. After payment, the room does not exist, the address is wrong, or a different, poorer room is shown. The person arrives in a new city at night with nowhere to stay.

How the scam works

The scammer copies photos and descriptions from real PG listings and posts them in groups with a rent lower than the area average. He answers within minutes, sends more pictures, and says only two beds are left. Someone moving from another city cannot visit, which is exactly what he relies on. He also uses a fake review page and screenshots of 'happy tenants' to look credible.

He asks for a token to hold the bed and then a full month plus deposit for 'confirmation'. A booking receipt with a logo is sent over WhatsApp. If the student hesitates, he mentions another candidate who is coming to see the room that evening. Some give a second payment just to keep the first one safe.

The payoff is the advance from many people for the same bed. When the student reaches the address, the real owner knows nothing about the booking, or a broker offers a different place for more money. The 'agent' stops replying and the number is switched off. Several students from different cities may be waiting at the same gate on the same morning.

An example of what you may see

Example message (invented): 'Hi, bed available in girls PG near the metro, Rs 4,500 with food. Only 2 left. Send Rs 3,000 token now to hold it, rest on arrival. See photos attached. A student is visiting at 6 pm, so confirm fast.' The photos are taken from a different listing. After the payment he adds: 'Booking confirmed, address will be sent on arrival, please send another Rs 1,500 for the gate pass.' Then the chat goes quiet.

This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

Red flags

What to do right now

  1. Visit the PG or ask a trusted local to see it before paying.
  2. Ask the owner or warden to confirm the booking directly, not the agent.
  3. Request a video call of the room, the building name and the street.
  4. Pay only after seeing a written agreement and the room.
  5. Search the photos online to see if they appear in other listings.

If you already paid or shared a code

  1. Call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in with chats and receipts.
  2. Ask your bank, on the number printed on your card, about holding the transfer.
  3. Report the listing to the group admin or platform and warn others.
  4. File a complaint at the local police station with the address and payment proof.

National Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930. Report online at cybercrime.gov.in. Do it fast: the sooner your bank is told, the better the chance that money can be held.

How Safeavio helps

Safeavio's scam check on the booking chat can point out the token pressure and the 'another student is coming' line, and the link check can warn if a booking page uses a lookalike address. Money Shield adds a checklist to run before sending a deposit. Safeavio cannot confirm that a room exists, so the visit or a live video walk-through is still the main protection.

Check it before you tap or pay

Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to pay a token before seeing a PG?

It is risky. If you cannot visit, ask a trusted friend or local relative to see it, or insist on a live video tour of the actual room. Pay only against a written receipt from the owner.

How can I check the person is the real owner?

Ask for the building name, meet the warden or ask neighbours, and confirm the booking with the owner on the number on the gate or board. A broker should have no problem arranging this. A real warden can usually arrange a short video call.

What if the room differs from the photos?

Do not pay more. Ask for the token back in writing and keep every chat. If the person refuses, report it to the platform and to cybercrime.gov.in. Do not agree to extra charges to get the money back.
