Wedding Vendor Advance Booking Scam
A wedding photographer, caterer or hall offers a discounted package for an advance, then vanishes before the event. See how families get cheated.
Families planning a wedding search for photographers, caterers, decorators and banquet halls online. A page with polished photos offers a package at a discount for an advance, 'only for this month'. The photos belong to another studio, the hall has no booking, or the vendor takes the advance and stops answering. The family discovers the problem close to the event, when there is little time to find a replacement.
How the scam works
The scammer builds a page or a profile with pictures taken from other vendors' portfolios and reviews that are copied or paid for. He answers quickly, shares a brochure with attractive packages and offers a festival or season discount that is better than any other vendor. A friendly call to understand the family's needs builds a sense of care that makes the family trust the stranger.
He asks for an advance of thirty to fifty percent to 'block the date', paid to a personal account or a UPI ID, with an agreement that is only a chat message or an unsigned form. More payments follow for 'extra decorations', 'upgrade' or 'permit' charges. Pressure arises from the wedding calendar: the date is in demand and another family is waiting for the same slot.
The payoff is the advance and extra fees. When the date nears, the vendor is not reachable, or says a 'team issue' means he cannot attend, offering a poorer substitute. Families lose the advance and also the booking time for a real vendor. Some victims also lose card details if the 'payment link' was a copied page, and are charged again later.
An example of what you may see
Example message (invented): 'Congratulations on the wedding! Our premium photography and decoration package for 3 days is only Rs 1,10,000 this month, normally Rs 1,80,000. Pay Rs 40,000 advance on this UPI ID to block your date. Another family has asked for the same date, so please confirm by tonight. Agreement will be sent after payment.' The portfolio photos are from another studio's page and the agreement never arrives. After the advance, the vendor says the contract can wait until next week and stops answering calls.
This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

How Safeavio helps
Safeavio's scam check can read a vendor's message you paste and mark the below-market price, the advance to a personal account and the tonight-only pressure, the QR check shows where a payment QR goes, and Money Shield offers a checklist before a deposit. It cannot verify a vendor's past work, so meet them and call their past clients. Meeting the vendor is the real test.

Questions people ask
Is it normal to pay an advance to a wedding vendor?
Yes, but it should be a part of the amount, paid to a business account in the vendor's registered name and backed by a signed agreement. Avoid paying to a personal UPI ID with no paper.
How can I check a photographer or caterer?
Ask for the names of recent clients and call them, look at full albums or taste a trial meal at a real kitchen, and visit the vendor's office or studio before booking. A real vendor will happily arrange a meeting or a tasting.
What if the vendor disappears?
Report to 1930 and cybercrime.gov.in, tell the police, and book a replacement at once. Keep every chat and receipt, because they help the complaint and may support a refund claim. Report quickly so other families are warned.
