Instagram Boutique Seller Asking for Advance Payment

A small Instagram page sells sarees, jewellery or gadgets by DM, takes an advance by UPI and then blocks you. See how to deal with sellers safely.

Many genuine small businesses sell through Instagram, which is exactly why this scam works. A page with a few hundred posts of sarees, bags or phone covers asks you to DM for price. You are asked for an advance of Rs 500 or Rs 1,000 to 'book' your piece. Once the payment goes through, the replies slow down, then stop, and the page is gone or has changed its name.

How the scam works

The scammer builds a page from images taken from other sellers and photographs of real stock found online. Followers are bought, and some comments are posted from accounts the scammer controls. The page replies fast in DM, speaks warmly and sends a catalogue on WhatsApp so the chat feels like a real shop with real customers.

The ask is framed as normal business. You hear that stock is custom made, that the courier needs a booking amount, or that the pieces are almost sold out and cannot be held without an advance. A small amount feels safe, so many people pay at once. The seller may also say the full payment is needed first because cash on delivery has caused 'losses'.

Once the advance arrives, delays appear: the courier is late, GST is pending, or a customs charge needs another payment. Each new request is a little larger than the last. The scammer collects as much as the buyer will pay, then blocks the buyer, deletes the page and begins again under a different handle with the same stolen photos.

An example of what you may see

Example DM thread (invented): 'Hello ma'am, this banarasi saree is Rs 2,400. Stock is limited, please send Rs 500 advance on UPI to book. Balance on delivery.' After the advance: 'Courier says Rs 300 packing and insurance is needed, send now and your saree will ship tonight.' A day later: 'This account is not available.' The seller sends a photo of a courier receipt that carries no tracking number, and says 'please trust me sister, I have many happy customers, see my highlights.'

This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

Red flags

What to do right now

  1. Ask for a short live video of the actual item and the seller, and see whether they agree.
  2. Check the name that shows on your UPI app before you confirm any payment.
  3. Search the page's photos on a reverse image search to see if they belong to someone else.
  4. Prefer cash on delivery or pay only after you receive the parcel when you can.
  5. Report the page to the platform if it asks for repeated advances.

If you already paid or shared a code

  1. Report to the helpline 1930 and cybercrime.gov.in quickly, with the UPI reference number.
  2. Inform your bank through its official app so it can note the payee account.
  3. Take screenshots of the page, handle, chat and payment before the account disappears.
  4. Do not send any more fees to 'release' the parcel; stop all payments to that seller.

National Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930. Report online at cybercrime.gov.in. Do it fast: the sooner your bank is told, the better the chance that money can be held.

How Safeavio helps

Before sending an advance, open Money Shield in Safeavio Sentinel and run the 'Verify before you pay' checklist, which asks the questions a rushed buyer forgets, such as whether the name matches. If the seller sends a payment link or QR code, use Link check or QR check to see where it leads. These tools help you pause and spot warnings; they cannot judge whether the seller is real, nor recover money.

Check it before you tap or pay

Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions people ask

Is it wrong to pay an advance to an Instagram seller?

Not always, since genuine small shops sometimes take advances for custom work. But combine it with checks: matching name on UPI, a live video of the item, real past customers and a modest amount. Never pay repeated extra fees.

What does a mismatched UPI name mean?

The name shown before you pay is the registered holder of the account. If it is a personal name that does not match the shop, you may be paying someone else. Ask the seller to explain before you proceed.

Can I trust a page with many followers?

Followers can be bought. Look at who comments, whether the videos show a real place, and whether customers post photos of items they received. Real activity is harder to fake than counts. Wait for repeated real customers and photos of delivered items.
