Fake Customer Care Number Found on Google Search

You search for a company's customer care number and land on a fake listing run by a scammer who asks for OTP, card or remote access.

Your order is late or your account has a problem, so you search for the customer care number. The top result or a map listing shows a number that looks official. The person who answers sounds helpful and has your order details ready. Within minutes he asks for an OTP, a small 'verification' payment or to install an app. The number was a fake listing, and the call was never connected to the company.

How the scam works

The scammer plants numbers in places people trust: paid ads, map listings, social posts and fake help pages. He uses the brand's name and logo, so the entry looks real. People searching in a hurry rarely check the website that the number belongs to, especially when stressed about a stuck refund or a cancelled booking.

When you call, the scammer collects your name, order and phone number and says he will fix the issue. To 'verify' you, he asks for a code sent to your phone, a card number, or a small refund test of Rs 1 to Rs 10 using a link he sends. Some also say the app will 'sync' your account and ask you to install a support application that gives him access to your screen.

The payoff is the money he can move once you share a code or let him in. The OTP may be for a payment, a SIM swap or a new login. Because you called him, you feel safe, and you may call back later when problems appear. The scammer can also sell your name and order details to others who repeat the scam.

An example of what you may see

Example call (invented): 'Thank you for calling customer care. I see your refund of Rs 2,300 is stuck. For verification, I will send a link. Please open it, enter your card number and the code that arrives. If you do not do this in five minutes your refund will be cancelled.' When you hesitate, he adds, 'Sir, I can also help over screen sharing, just install this small app from the store and read me the nine-digit code on your screen.'

This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

How Safeavio helps

Safeavio Sentinel cannot see search results, but you can paste any message or link the 'agent' sends into Scam check or Link check to see the warning signs, such as urgency and a request for an OTP. Phone scan can show you if a remote-access app was installed on your device. It does not block calls and cannot verify a phone number belongs to a company.

Check it before you tap or pay

Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions people ask

How do I find the real customer care number?

Use the company's own app, a bill or card, or its official website typed by hand. Avoid numbers from ads, map listings or social posts, as scammers place fake ones there. Keep that number in your phone contacts under the company's name for next time.

Why would a real helpline ask for an OTP?

It will not. An OTP exists to approve something you are doing yourself. A genuine agent can help without it, and any request to read it out is a warning sign. The agent can see the same details through the company's own system, so asking for a code is never needed.

I already called a fake number. What now?

Do not call again. Check your bank messages, change passwords, remove any app he told you to install, and call 1930 if any money moved or a code was shared. A call with a bank can also help you check recent transactions and block your card quickly.
