Instagram Boutique Seller Asking for Advance Payment on WhatsApp
How it looks on WhatsApp, the red flags and what to do.
WhatsApp scams arrive from numbers you do not know, from a friend whose account was taken over, or from a group you were added to without asking. Instagram Boutique Seller Asking for Advance Payment is one of the ways this shows up: A small Instagram page sells sarees, jewellery or gadgets by DM, takes an advance by UPI and then blocks you. See how to deal with sellers safely.
What instagram boutique seller asking for advance payment looks like on WhatsApp
- A friend or relative asking for urgent money from a new number or a hacked account.
- A group invite promising returns, jobs or prizes.
- A PDF, APK or image that must be opened to "see the details".
The scammer builds a page from images taken from other sellers and photographs of real stock found online. Followers are bought, and some comments are posted from accounts the scammer controls. The page replies fast in DM, speaks warmly and sends a catalogue on WhatsApp so the chat feels like a real shop with real customers.
Red flags to check on the WhatsApp message
- The seller insists on an advance and refuses cash on delivery.
- The account is new, has bought followers and generic comments, and shows no videos of the real shop.
- The UPI name that appears when you pay does not match the business name.
- New fees such as packing, insurance or customs appear after you pay.
- You are added to a group full of people praising profits.
- The sender moves you quickly to Telegram or to a second app.
What to do
- Ask for a short live video of the actual item and the seller, and see whether they agree.
- Check the name that shows on your UPI app before you confirm any payment.
- Search the page's photos on a reverse image search to see if they belong to someone else.
- Turn on two-step verification in WhatsApp settings so a stolen SMS code is not enough.
- Warn the group or family, and report the number on Sanchar Saathi if it is a scam call or message.
- Do not click links or open files. Do not send money or codes.
Inside WhatsApp use Block and report; for numbers that call or text you, the Sanchar Saathi portal (Chakshu facility) also takes complaints.
If money or a code is already gone
- Report to the helpline 1930 and cybercrime.gov.in quickly, with the UPI reference number.
- Inform your bank through its official app so it can note the payee account.
- Take screenshots of the page, handle, chat and payment before the account disappears.
- Do not send any more fees to 'release' the parcel; stop all payments to that seller.
National Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930; report at cybercrime.gov.in.
Before sending an advance, open Money Shield in Safeavio Sentinel and run the 'Verify before you pay' checklist, which asks the questions a rushed buyer forgets, such as whether the name matches. If the seller sends a payment link or QR code, use Link check or QR check to see where it leads. These tools help you pause and spot warnings; they cannot judge whether the seller is real, nor recover money.
Check it before you tap or pay
