PG and Hostel Booking Advance Scam through an app
How it looks through an app, the red flags and what to do.
The app is the scammer's way in: it can read what is on the screen, collect contacts and push you to pay. PG and Hostel Booking Advance Scam is one of the ways this shows up: A PG or hostel listing with cheap rent asks for a booking advance, then vanishes or shows a different room. See how students and workers are cheated.
What pg and hostel booking advance scam looks like through an app
- A screen-sharing or remote-control app that a caller asks you to install.
- A loan app that asks for contacts and photos.
- A "KYC", "challan" or "bank rewards" app from a link.
The scammer copies photos and descriptions from real PG listings and posts them in groups with a rent lower than the area average. He answers within minutes, sends more pictures, and says only two beds are left. Someone moving from another city cannot visit, which is exactly what he relies on. He also uses a fake review page and screenshots of 'happy tenants' to look credible.
Red flags to check on the app
- Rent well below nearby listings with food and wi-fi included.
- The agent will not do a video call walk-through of the actual room.
- A token is demanded to a personal UPI ID before any visit.
- The photos look like a brochure and show no building name.
- It asks for accessibility, screen overlay, SMS or contacts without a clear reason.
- You were told to install it by a stranger or a caller.
What to do
- Visit the PG or ask a trusted local to see it before paying.
- Ask the owner or warden to confirm the booking directly, not the agent.
- Request a video call of the room, the building name and the street.
- Change the passwords of your bank and email from a clean device if the app had access.
- Run a phone scan (Safeavio Sentinel lists risky apps and settings).
- Call your bank, and call 1930 if money moved.
Report the fake app to the store it came from and, if money moved, call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in.
If money or a code is already gone
- Call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in with chats and receipts.
- Ask your bank, on the number printed on your card, about holding the transfer.
- Report the listing to the group admin or platform and warn others.
- File a complaint at the local police station with the address and payment proof.
National Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930; report at cybercrime.gov.in.
Safeavio's scam check on the booking chat can point out the token pressure and the 'another student is coming' line, and the link check can warn if a booking page uses a lookalike address. Money Shield adds a checklist to run before sending a deposit. Safeavio cannot confirm that a room exists, so the visit or a live video walk-through is still the main protection.
