PG and Hostel Booking Advance Scam over the phone

How it looks over the phone, the red flags and what to do.

A phone call lets the scammer talk fast, sound confident and keep you from thinking. The caller ID can be faked, so it proves nothing. PG and Hostel Booking Advance Scam is one of the ways this shows up: A PG or hostel listing with cheap rent asks for a booking advance, then vanishes or shows a different room. What pg and hostel booking advance scam looks like over the phone

• A calm, official voice that already knows your name or the last digits of your card.
• Being told to stay on the line and not to tell your family.
• Instructions to install a screen-sharing app or to press keys on the phone.

The scammer copies photos and descriptions from real PG listings and posts them in groups with a rent lower than the area average. He answers within minutes, sends more pictures, and says only two beds are left. Someone moving from another city cannot visit, which is exactly what he relies on. He also uses a fake review page and screenshots of 'happy tenants' to look credible.

Red flags to check on the phone call

• Rent well below nearby listings with food and wi-fi included.
• The agent will not do a video call walk-through of the actual room.
• A token is demanded to a personal UPI ID before any visit.
• The photos look like a brochure and show no building name.
• You are told that a case, arrest, block or penalty is coming within minutes.
• You are asked to move money to a "safe account".

What to do

1. Visit the PG or ask a trusted local to see it before paying.
2. Ask the owner or warden to confirm the booking directly, not the agent.
3. Request a video call of the room, the building name and the street.
4. Hang up. A real bank or office will not mind that you call them back.
5. Call the bank or office on the number printed on your card, bill or official app, not on a number the caller gave.
6. Never share an OTP or PIN. No genuine staff member needs it.

Report the number on the Sanchar Saathi portal (Chakshu facility). If money moved, call 1930 immediately.

If money or a code is already gone

1. Call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in with chats and receipts.
2. Ask your bank, on the number printed on your card, about holding the transfer.
3. Report the listing to the group admin or platform and warn others.
4. File a complaint at the local police station with the address and payment proof.
