DTH and Set-Top Box KYC Recharge Scam
A call or SMS says your DTH channels will stop unless KYC is updated or a recharge is done through a link, then takes card and UPI details.
Families who watch TV every day dread the screen going blank. A message says your DTH or set-top box will be deactivated tonight unless KYC is updated or a small recharge is done. It carries a link or a helpline number. The page or the person on the call asks for your card, UPI details or a remote access app. Your TV is fine. The target is your bank balance.
How the scam works
The scammer names a major DTH or cable provider and sends the message to many numbers. Some people also find fake customer care numbers while searching online during a real recharge problem. The message says the box serial number needs KYC, or that a mandatory update is due, and that failing to do it will end service today.
The pressure is a blank screen and an irritated household. The caller or form asks you to confirm your subscriber ID, then asks for a small amount, such as Rs 10 or Rs 20, to 'activate' the update. The caller may stay on the line and ask you to open your payment app, share a screen or read a code. Elderly viewers, who are used to phone help for TV, are often the target.
The payoff comes from the card details, the UPI PIN you enter or the remote access you give. The small amount you pay does not reach the provider. The scammer uses what they collected to send larger amounts out of your account, sometimes in several small steps. Your TV remains active because it never had a problem, which is why no real service call ever fixes anything.
An example of what you may see
Example message (invented): 'Dear subscriber, your DTH set-top box KYC is pending. Service will be deactivated tonight. Update now: link, or call our helpline. Recharge Rs 10 to activate verification.' On the call the agent says: 'Open your payment app and enter the PIN to complete the Rs 10 verification.' Entering a PIN sends money out. Your provider can be checked in its own app or on the number printed on your bill.
This example is written for illustration. Real messages change their wording, names and links all the time.

How Safeavio helps
Safeavio Sentinel's scam check reads the pasted text and explains the pressure it finds, such as a same-night deadline, a tiny recharge and a request for a PIN. The link check shows lookalike or shortened addresses before you open them, and Money Shield reminds you that you never need a PIN to receive money. It cannot tell if a helpline number is real. Always use your provider's official app or bill details.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions people ask
Will my DTH stop if I ignore the message?
Not because of a text from a stranger. Check your account in the provider's official app or on its official site. Services stop for genuine reasons you can see in your own account, not for an unconfirmed KYC call.
How do I find the real customer care number?
Use the number on your bill, the box or inside the official app. Search results and ads can show fake numbers placed by scammers, especially when you search during a problem. A short pause costs nothing and can save a lot.
Why does the caller want my UPI PIN?
A PIN is needed only to send money. A caller asking for it, or asking you to enter it to receive something, is taking money from you. Never type a PIN for a stranger. When unsure, ask someone you trust first.
