How to remove an app that will not uninstall on Android
Uninstall greyed out or the app comes back? Try these steps in order: admin rights, Safe mode, disabling and, if needed, a clean reset.
Some apps refuse to go. The Uninstall button is greyed out, it says the app is a device administrator, or the app keeps coming back. That is a warning sign, though a few are normal phone-maker apps. Work through these steps in order. Menu names differ slightly on Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and OnePlus phones.
Steps
- Check if it is a system app. Open Settings, then Apps, and tap the app. If you see Disable and not Uninstall, it came with the phone. You can disable it, but leave it if you are unsure what it does.
- Remove its admin rights. Search Settings for Device admin apps. If the app is listed, switch it off and choose Deactivate. Then go back to Apps and try Uninstall again. This fixes most greyed out buttons.
- Remove accessibility and other access. Check Accessibility, Notification access and Display over other apps for the same name. Switch each off. Some bad apps use these to block removal by covering buttons or pressing Back.
- Try Safe mode. Restart in Safe mode, which pauses downloaded apps, then go to Settings, Apps and uninstall it. Our Safe mode guide explains the steps. If it uninstalls there, restart normally and check it is gone.
- Check how it got there and reset if needed. If it returns, someone may have access to your Google account or a second app reinstalls it. Change passwords, remove unknown apps and, if it persists, back up and factory reset the phone.
Menu names differ a little between phone makers and Android versions. If you cannot find a setting, open Settings and use the search box.
Why it matters
Stalkerware, loan apps and some adware use device admin and accessibility rights to resist removal. An app that fights you is one you should take seriously. Removing it step by step, and then changing passwords, stops it collecting data and can protect others whose details are in your contacts, which is worth the effort even if it takes a while.
Watch out for
- Do not call a number shown in a popup that says an app cannot be removed.
- Removing a stalkerware app may alert the person who installed it, so think about your safety first.
- Change your Google and bank passwords from a different clean device.
- Do not delete files by hand in system folders.
How Safeavio helps
Safeavio's phone scan helps you spot stalkerware-style apps, copies of other apps and apps outside a store, and shows which permissions they hold, so you know which settings to switch off before removal. It tells you what looks wrong and how to fix it, but it does not remove malware by magic.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions
Why is Uninstall greyed out?
Usually because the app is a device admin, a system app or a managed work app. Deactivate its admin right first, then try again. If it is a system app, disable it instead.
Should I factory reset?
As a last step. First try the steps above, change passwords and remove odd apps. If the phone still shows popups, high battery use or hidden apps, back up your photos and reset.
