How to back up and restore your Android phone safely
Back up photos, contacts, app data and chats before a reset or phone change, and restore without bringing back a bad app. Steps for Android phones.
A backup is your safety net before a reset, repair, upgrade or loss. Android can back up many things to your Google account, but not everything. Check what is covered, add the rest, and restore carefully so you do not copy a problem across. Menu names differ slightly on Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and OnePlus phones.
Steps
- Turn on Google backup. Open Settings and search for Backup. Choose Backup by Google One or Google backup and switch on Back up by Google One. Tap Back up now. Check the time shows recently.
- Back up photos and videos. Open the Google Photos app, tap your profile picture, then Photos settings, then Backup. Turn it on and check that it finishes. Alternatively copy your photos to a computer or memory card.
- Save contacts and chats. Contacts sync with your Google account, check them in Settings, then Google, or the Contacts app. For WhatsApp open Settings, Chats, Chat backup and tap Back up. Use a Google account you control.
- Note your logins and authenticators. Write down or move 2-step verification codes and authenticator apps before a reset, or you could be locked out. Keep backup codes safe and offline. Know your Google account password.
- Restore carefully. On the new or reset phone, sign in to your Google account and choose to restore. Skip apps you do not recognise. After restoring, check Install unknown apps, Accessibility and Device admin for anything odd.
Menu names differ a little between phone makers and Android versions. If you cannot find a setting, open Settings and use the search box.
Why it matters
Many people lose photos, chats and two-step codes because they reset in a hurry. A good backup turns a stolen, damaged or infected phone into a bad day instead of a disaster. Careful restoring also stops an old bad app or setting from returning after you cleaned the phone, so take your time and review each step.
Watch out for
- Do not trust a backup tool or cloud storage link you received by message.
- Backups can carry an infected app across, so restore selectively.
- App data from banking apps is usually not restored, only the app, so you may need to log in again.
- A backup is only useful if you have tested it.
How Safeavio helps
Safeavio's Privacy tools include data export and delete and secure delete, which help when you want to take your data out or remove it for good. Phone scan reviews apps and settings after a restore. Anti-theft recovery information helps if the phone is lost. It does not back up your files.
Check it before you tap or pay
Safeavio Sentinel is a made-in-India Android app: paste a message or link, or scan a QR code, and get a plain verdict with the reasons. It helps you spot a scam; it does not promise to stop every one.

Questions
Does Google backup save everything?
No. It covers settings, contacts, some app data and more, depending on the phone. Photos, chats and files may need their own backup. Check each one before you reset.
Will restoring bring back malware?
It can bring back apps, so skip unknown ones. If you reset because of an infection, install fresh apps from the Play Store instead of restoring all apps.
